Chronic conflicts, drought, earthquakes, floods, seasonal storms, and severe winter weather, compounded by limited government response capacity in some countries, present significant challenges to vulnerable populations in South Asia. Between FY 2008 and FY 2017, USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) and USAID’s Office of Food for Peace (USAID/FFP) provided humanitarian assistance in response to a diverse range of natural and man-made disasters in the region.

The UAE provided over 254.4 million units of polio vaccine to more than 43 million Pakistani children between 2014 and 2017, through its anti-polio drive in the country.

The UAE-Pakistan Assistance Programme, UAE-PAP, was launched under the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, to support the health sector and strengthen the polio prevention programmes in Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is grateful for a landmark contribution by China that will provide food and nutrition assistance to displaced people and returnee families in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

In its first ever contribution to WFP in Pakistan, China contributed US$1 million to enable WFP food assistance for 158,000 people in Peshawar, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank and Bannu districts of KP, in addition to North Waziristan, South Waziristan, Khyber, Kurram, Mohmand and Orakzai agencies in FATA.

In 2010, the humanitarian community established Pakistan Humanitarian Pooled Fund (PHPF) previously known as Emergency Response Fund (ERF) as a pooled fund mechanism to provide rapid and flexible funds in the country at the onset of an emergency.
The majority of PHPF funding acts as a bridge to cover gaps in humanitarian service provision of urgent humanitarian needs. In many cases, this has been the only funding available to meet critical humanitarian needs.

Thirty-six donors pledged US$383 million to the Fund to ensure urgent humanitarian aid reaches people in need whenever and wherever crises hit. CERF also reached a record high income of $504 million for 2017 through additional commitments made by donors.
