GENEVA (16 April 2018) – The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) announced today that the UAE has completed the US$ 120 million commitment made by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the 2013 Global Vaccine Summit in Abu Dhabi.

The Empress Shôken Fund is named after Her Majesty the Empress of Japan, who proposed – at the 9th International Conference of the Red Cross – the creation of an international fund to promote relief work in peacetime. It is administered by the Joint Commission of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the International Committee of the Red Cross, which maintains close contact with the Japanese Permanent Mission in Geneva, the Japanese Red Cross Society and the Meiji Jingu Research Institute in Japan.

As of March, conflict has internally displaced over 42,200 people, 147,500 undocumented Afghans have returned from Iran and Pakistan and natural disasters have affected roughly 3,900 people since January, according to the UN.

The Republic of Korea has brought its support to UNESCO’s Girls’ Right to Education Programme in Pakistan with the signing of an agreement between UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay and the country’s Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Mr Lee Byong-hyun, on 23 March 2017.

The USD 3.4 million project with the Korea International Cooperation Agency will support national capacity building to realize girls’ right to education in Pakistan’s Punjab province and Gilgit-Baltistan, through interventions targeting education officials, community leaders, teachers and parents.

When a National Red Cross or Red Crescent Society needs immediate financial support to respond to a disaster, it can request funds from the DREF.

During another harsh winter in eastern Afghanistan over the past five months, CWS Japan provided cash assistance to help families returning from Pakistan after years in exile to meet basic needs, including interventions to help prevent often-deadly acute respiratory illness among children. Since most families are living in extreme conditions without full shelter or heat, young children face multiple health risks, but ARIs are the deadliest.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has decided to go for advanced mechanism to diagnose poliovirus and determine its area of origin.

Not only advanced machinery will be purchased but staff will also be trained in using it.

National Coordinator of the National Emergency Operation Centre for polio eradication Dr Rana Mohammad Safdar while talking to Dawn said diagnosis of poliovirus was increasingly becoming difficult as the virus has been decreasing in Pakistan.

Japan to provide $3.2m for procurement of new equipment

With polio at the lowest levels in history in Pakistan, the country has launched a powerful and hopefully final assault on the disease in 2018. A crucial part of this is to further strengthen the ability of the polio programme to detect virus in stool samples, thereby giving clear indications of where and how the virus is moving in areas where populations remain under-immunized.
