Two million Australian dollars to support crucial reproductive health care and address violence against women among internally displaced people and returning migrants

Kabul 20 June 2017 - The Government of Australia has stepped up its long-running support for the crucial work the United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, does in Afghanistan with a pledge of two million Australian dollars for emergency reproductive health care and supplies along with services to tackle violence against women among internally displaced people and returning migrants.

Today on World Refugee Day I announce that the Australian Government will provide humanitarian assistance to support Afghan refugees in Pakistan, people returning to Afghanistan from neighbouring countries, and Afghan people who have been displaced by conflict.

The United Nations estimates over 3.3 million Afghan people are currently displaced across Afghanistan and Pakistan. Additionally, since January 2016 over 1.1 million people have returned to Afghanistan from neighbouring countries. Many returnees are in urgent need of assistance with resettlement and reintegration.

Immigration Detention And Community Statistics Summary

At 30 April 2017, there were 1,392 people in immigration detention facilities, including 1,108 in immigration detention on the mainland and 284 in immigration detention on Christmas Island.

A further 556 people were living in the community after being approved for a residence determination and 23,573 were living in the community after grant of a Bridging Visa E.

Australia’s support to the World Bank Multi Donor Trust Fund for the Border Areas (MDTFBA) has helped to provide nearly 250 schools with infrastructure and new facilities in Balochistan Province, Pakistan.

The Promoting Girls Education in Balochistan (PGEB) program supported access to education and the retention of children in schools, with a special focus on girls. The program brought almost 39,000 children into school, including almost 33,500 girls from across Balochistan.

During my visit to Islamabad and Lahore, I confirmed that the Australian Government will provide ongoing humanitarian assistance to support thousands of internally displaced people in Pakistan, the majority of whom are women and children.

The Australian Government will continue to work closely with Pakistan to generate sustainable growth and employment through trade and investment, improvements to agricultural productivity, water resource management and industry.
