SITUATION: A full-fledged military operation in North Waziristan (Pakistan) has greatly intensified following recent Taliban attacks on the Karachi International Airport. Suicide bombings that began in December 2013 in the region helped precipitate a spiral of violence and counter-violence, causing displacement of more than 23,000 persons earlier this year.

In response to these continuous attacks on government assets and army personnel, the military operation, named Zarb-e-Azb, has been launched. Up to 30,000 troops will be involved in the operation, officials said.

SITUATION: Drought and resulting extreme food scarcity are imperiling life in District Tharparkar, one of 23 districts in the southern Pakistan province of Sindh.

As one example, in the last three months, at least 121 people have died as a result of what authorities believe are drought-related causes – this in the midst of hundreds of thousands migrating from the region because of precarious conditions.

Background:

The much-hyped up controversial peace talks with Taliban were suspended on February 17, 2014 following the execution of 23 FC (Frontier Constabulary) soldiers captured from Shongari check post in 2010 by a terrorist outfit calling itself Mohmand Agency Taliban. This proved to be a devastating blow to the government’s ‘last-ditch’ efforts to bring peace to the terror-stricken nation through negotiations. A total of 93 people have been killed since the reconciliation effort was launched at the end of January, including the kidnapped soldiers.

SITUATION: On April 16, at least six people in Pakistan and 40 people in Iran were killed when a major earthquake, with a 7.8 magnitude, struck a region near the Iran-Pakistan border. Tremors were also felt in India and the Gulf states.

The epicenter was in southeast Iran in an area of scarcely-populated mountains and desert. It was located 125 miles southeast of the Iranian city of Zahedan and 155 miles northwest of Turbat in Pakistan.

SITUATION: Earlier this month, more than 200 homes in the Joseph Colony, a predominately Christian area near Lahore, were attacked following an altercation between a Muslim man and Christian man; the Muslim alleged the Christian man made blasphemous remarks. In the resulting violence of March 9, as many as 3,000 persons ransacked and looted the colony, setting fire to houses, destroying them.

In August, CWS-P/A began health assistance for the displaced population in Peshawar District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province (KPK) and its surrounding areas. Access to basic facilities has undoubtedly been challenging for many of the displaced families, particularly for women and children. With low wages from daily labor, families face ongoing hardships in accessing many of their needs. Presently, CWS-P/A provides assistance through the operation of two hydraulic mobile health units (HMHUs), one mobile health unit (MHU), one mobile laboratory unit (MLU), and one ambulance.
