Roma – Italian development cooperation has decided to allocate multilateral emergency funding of 500,000 euro to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to help the communities hit by the earthquake in the vast region between Afghanistan and Pakistan. About 300 died in the earthquake and over 2000 people were injured. The Italian cooperation funding will be used for search and rescue operations and to provide emergency accommodation and essential supplies.

Italy has launched a new aid package for the north western Pakistani areas hit by last year’s floods, with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at disbursing another €3 million within the context of the MFA programme of collaboration with the Pakistani government.

The MoU was signed by Ambassador of Italy to Islamabad Vincenzo Prati and Director General of the Authority for the Management of Natural Disasters (PDMA) of the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Shakeel Qadir Khan.

Italian Development Cooperation is taking action to help the flood victims in Pakistan. The creation of an in situ fund amounting to 2.6 million euros has been approved to help lessen the impact of the floods on the living conditions of the most vulnerable sectors of the population of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The programme envisages initiatives in the following sectors: agriculture and food security, housing, health, water and environmental health.

"I am preparing an extraordinary additional aid programme for the populations affected by the tragic floods in Pakistan: it is a major package much larger than the €4.5 million already donated, and will be an additional contribution that I will make available within the next few weeks". This was Minister Frattini's announcement in an interview for Radio 1.

The Minister also reported that he would be meeting in Rome on 13 September with his Pakistani colleague for Religious Minorities and that they would be discussing this as well.

In view of the worsening humanitarian crisis in Pakistan, which has been so badly hit by the recent floods, the Foreign Ministry's Directorate General for Development Cooperation (DGDC) has donated a further one million euros in response to the United Nations "Pakistan Initial Floods Emergency Response Plan" appeal.

Most notably, 600,000 euros will be given to UNICEF and 400,000 to the World Health Organisation (WHO) with the aim of combating the increased risk of epidemics.
