Executive Summary

There is a long history of natural and man-made disasters in Pakistan. One of the worst kind of man-made complex emergency occurred in early 2013 in FATA where houses and markets were targeted by the militants leaving people homeless, displaced and exposed to risks and vulnerabilities.

Muslim Aid and Poverty Eradication Initiative (PEI) successfully implemented a one-month project entitled ‘Conflict Victim Support Programme’ from 28 January 2013. The purpose of the project was to distribute winter clothes and shoes to 2500 internally displaced children. These children are enrolled in 8 formal and 19 non-formal schools established and run by Muslim Aid in Jalozai IDPs camp, district Nowshera. The family members of the children were also given winter clothes. As a result, a total of 11,000 individuals benefitted.

In fact they are examples of natural hazards that turn into disasters once villages, towns and cities have been affected. A lack in preparation to handle such perils leaves communities vulnerable to the damages caused. Thus it is important to establish methods and programmes to reduce the risks brought to humans by natural hazards, as well as programmes which enable local communities to come together to learn and develop new skills in preparing and responding to catastrophes.

Muslim Aid Sri Lanka has signed a MOU with the High Commission for Pakistan in Sri Lanka to provide water facilities to around 400 recently resettled families in Mannar and Mullaitivu districts.

The MOU was signed by the Her Excellency Seema Ilahi Baloch, the High Commissioner for Pakistan to Sri Lanka and the Country Director for Muslim Aid Sri Lanka Faizer Khan. The function was held at Pakistan High Commission in Colombo and the High Commission official and Muslim Aid representatives also attended the event.

Muslim Aid has launched an emergency appeal to help the victims of the recent flash floods in Pakistan, which is still recovering from last year's devastating deluge. After heavy monsoon rains in August which are still continuing, up to 5.2 million people have been affected by floods in 22 districts in Sindh. Flood waters over roads and bridges have cut off public transport and relief workers' access to affected villages.

A year on from the worst flooding in Pakistan’s history, millions of people continue to need support to rebuild their lives. Homes, livelihoods and infrastructure were destroyed, killing over 2000 people and affecting 20 million people.

Following emergency relief distribution in the immediate aftermath of the flooding, Muslim Aid began to implement a Flood Recovery Programme, including model village reconstruction projects currently underway in Charsadda, Mianwalli, Jampur, Thatta and Dadu districts, in the KPK, Punjab and Sindh provinces of Pakistan.

Tens of thousands of people have been displaced from the districts of Buner and Lower Dir in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP) since fighting flared in northern Pakistan last month. The government is preparing for up to 500,000 internal refugees, the largest displacement crisis in Pakistan's history.

According to UNHCR (UN High Commissioner for Refugees), in the Swat Valley some 200,000 people had been displaced already and another 300,000 were on the move or about to flee.

Today, the Chairman of the Noor Ul Islam Trust, Yusuf Hansa presented a cheque of =A35,100 to the Community Liaison Officer of Muslim Aid, Mr M.W Khokhar. According to officials at least 200 people have been killed after an earthquake of 6.4 magnitude hit the Balochistan province in south-western Pakistan last night. Since then two tremors struck this morning meaning thousands more are expected to have lost their homes and the death toll is expected to rise.

The worst-hit area appears to be Ziarat, about 50km north of Quetta, where hundreds of mostly mud and timber houses had been destroyed in five villages- War Choom, Kawas Wam, Kan Depot and Serkhazee.
