Completing its fourth day of the resumed 2011 session, the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) today recommended special consultative status for 25 entities to the Economic and Social Council, and postponed consideration of 26 additional groups until the Committee receive answers to its outstanding questions.

Summary

The present report has been prepared pursuant to General Assembly resolution 46/182, in which the Assembly requested the Secretary-General to report annually to the Assembly and the Economic and Social Council on the coordination of emergency humanitarian assistance. The Economic and Social Council this morning opened its Humanitarian Affairs Segment, holding a general discussion on strengthening the coordination of humanitarian assistance: present challenges and their impact on the future.

Tiina Intelmann, Vice-President of the Economic and Social Council, introducing the Humanitarian Affairs Segment on strengthening the coordination of humanitarian assistance: present challenges and their impact on the future, said humanitarian practitioners feared that hundreds of millions more would be in need of humanitarian assistance in the coming few years.

GENEVA, 16 July (UN Information Service) - The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) this afternoon held a panel discussion on the use of military assets for natural disaster relief.

Introducing the panel discussion, Hjalmar Hannesson ( Iceland), Vice-President of the Council, said at a time where the incidence and severity of natural disasters were increasing, military assets continued to be requested, offered and provided by Governments in support of humanitarian relief operations. But such support had not been without challenges.
