1.ON 3 JULY 1994 WIDESPREAD MONSOON RAINS CAUSED CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE, PARTICULARLY IN LOW-LYING AREAS OF RAWALPINDI AND ISLAMABAD WHERE 190 MM OF RAIN WAS RECORDED. THIS REPRESENTS THE SECOND HIGHEST DOWNPOUR IN THESE CITIES ON RECORD. RAIN WAS ALSO RECORDED IN MURREE (62 MM), RISALPUR (29 MM) AND KARACHI (31 MM), AND TO A LESSER EXTENT IN PESHAWAR, LAHORE, SIALKOT, MULTAN, BAHAWALPUR, SHORKOT AND QUETTA.

SITUATION

1. THE GOVERNMENT HAS DECLARED A STATE OF EMERGENCY FOLLOWING TORRENTIAL RAINS IN THE NORTH AND CENTRE OF PAKISTAN SINCE THE MIDDLE OF LAST WEEK. THE WORST AFFECTED AREA APPEARS TO BE AZAD KASHMIR.

IMPACT

2. OVER 2,000 PEOPLE HAVE BEEN REPORTED KILLED, ROADS AND MANY BRIDGES ARE DAMAGED. AGRICULTURAL LAND AND CROPS ARE SERIOUSLY AFFECTED. THE DAMAGE IS DESCRIBED AS ENORMOUS.

1. AN EARTHQUAKE MEASURING 5.7 ON RICHTER SCALE HIT PAKISTAN ON 28 AUGUST AT 5.51 HRS LOCAL TIME, APPROXIMATELY 100 KM SOUTH WEST QUETTA. EPICENTER LOCATED AT 29.3 DEGREES NORTH, 66.7 DEGREES EAST, ACCORDING TO UNITED STATES GEOLOGICAL SURVEY.

2. PRELIMINARY REPORTS OF DAMAGE INCLUDES 4 DEATHS AND DAMAGE TO HOUSING. NO INFORMATION IS YET AVAILABLE ON RELIEF NEEDS OR ASSISTANCE. NO REQUEST FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE HAS BEEN RECEIVED BY DHA-UNDRO.

1. AS OF 9 AUGUST, HEAVY MONSOON RAINS HAVE AFFECTED 13 DISTRICTS, BREACHED 11 CANALS AND FLOODED MORE THAN 100 VILLAGES IN SINDH PROVINCE, SOUTHERN PAKISTAN.

2. 94 PERSONS DIED AND MORE THAN 270,000 HOUSES HAVE BEEN SUBSTANTIALLY DAMAGED (123,000 COMPLETELY AND 150,000 PARTIALLY) IN THE FLOODS, WHICH ALSO KILLED 5,700 HEADS OF CATTLE AND CAUSED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO STANDING CROPS OF PADDY, COTTON, SUGARCRANE AND VEGETABLES.
