Annual Report 2016

In 2016, we increased our humanitarian efforts in some of the world’s most challenging environments. As the war in Syria entered its sixth year, our £26.6 million emergency response programme supported over three million vulnerable people living in Syria as well as refugees in three neighbouring countries. In Iraq and Yemen, as the crises continued to shatter lives, we provided life-saving aid, often in areas that other organisations are unable to access.

This year’s global Ramadan food distribution campaign was the most successful ever, raising £7.5 million from across the world, including every continent.

With these generously donated funds, Islamic Relief distributed 250,000 large food packs in 35 countries, reaching 2 million people.

Our teams reached some of the poorest and most remote and dangerous places in the world, including in Iraq, Syria, Somalia and Yemen.

Increased tensions on the Pakistani-Indian border have caused 11,000 families to flee.

Over the last two days Islamic Relief has delivered 300 food packs to feed 1,500 people who have fled their homes in the Upper Neelum Valley.

It’s believed thousands of families living along the border line have left their homes behind and moved towards nearby towns.

Some are staying with family members, while others are seeking shelter in government-allocated buildings.

Islamic Relief has been tackling gender injustice with a bathroom building scheme in a remote area of Pakistan.

In the Himalayan Bamburat Valley, in the northern district of Chitral, the Kalash indigenous group is Pakistan’s smallest religious minority, with a community of less than 5,000.

In Pakistan, in the northern districts of Chitral and Shangla, Islamic Relief has this month launched a two-month intense project to distribute winter items to around 1,500 earthquake-affected people. In Afghanstan, a one-month project in remote areas of Badakhshan, Takhar, Jalalabad and Kunar is expected to reach 1,400 people.

Following the earthquake on Monday, October 26, Islamic Relief is distributing tents, plastic sheets, kits to help people stay warm in winter, and food. Haseeb Khalid reports from Churan Ovir, Chitral, in Pakistan.

As more snow is expected and thunder grows louder, we are continuing our relief efforts day and night to reach people with blankets, sleeping mattress, plastic sheets and shelter in Chitral. Our thoughts are with those whose houses have been destroyed in the recent earthquake and who are now living under fragile structures – not a pleasant sleep for them.

A GBP £2.2 million programme being delivered by Islamic Relief Pakistan is transforming lives and communities in Charsadda and Nowshera, Khyber Pakhtoonkhw.

The integrated community development programme is helping 16 villages in Charsadda and Nowshehra, districts which are struggling to recover from the 2009 internal displacement crisis and flooding in 2010. Families grapple with under-developed water, sanitation and other key infrastructure, poor livelihoods prospects and widespread poverty.

Islamic Relief and the government of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) have this week signed an agreement that is being hailed as a significant step toward a disaster resilient AJK.

In the last few years, disasters have killed scores of people and wreaked vital infrastructure in AJK. Tens of thousands of people were affected by widespread flash flooding in AJK last year. As well as recurrent flooding and landslides, the area is also prone to earthquakes.
