AIDMI's publication of Southasiadisasters.net is titled "Beyond AMCDRR Ulaanbaatar " and focuses on themes that now inform the disaster risk reduction agenda of the region post AMCDRR 2018. The region of Asia-Pacific is highly exposed to risk of many disasters. In 2017 alone, more than 6,500 people lost their lives in Asia following more than 200 disasters that affected 66.7 million people.

The government of Japan has announced its support to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) for Seasonal Livelihood Programming in erstwhile Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA). The official announcement was made by the Secretary for Livelihood and Production Department, Abdul Latif, and the Ambassador of Japan in Pakistan, H.E. Mr. Takashi Kurai, during a press event in Islamabad.

Summary

This framework document aims to introduce a proactive approach to assess adaptation needs and encourage timely adaptation. The idea behind this approach is that if an assessment shows that specific policies and practices of stakeholders are at risk of failure due to climate change, corrections are encouraged and losses or damages can be prevented. The approach focuses on identifying whether and when the performance of policies, management, and social-cultural practices drops below a decisive level due to climate change, and adaptation is required.

SLAMABAD: Recent rains have improved river flows, which have subsequently enhanced storage in major reservoirs of the country, and are likely to cause high to very high flood in the River Chenab at some major headworks, including Marala, Khanki and Qadirabad.

“According to latest hydrological conditions River Chenab at Marala, Khanki and Qadirabad is likely to attain high flood level in next 36 hours,” says a forecast issued by the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) of the Pakistan Meteorological Department.

At least four communities across the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) are better prepared to fight floods this year. Floods and flash floods in the Hindu Kush Himalaya cause considerable loss of lives and property in downstream communities, particularly during the monsoon. To address such flood risks and to enhance the resilience of vulnerable communities, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and its partner organizations have set up community-based flood early warning systems (CBFEWS).

14 July 2018, Gilgit – Following the Inception Workshop held in Islamabad on 5 July, 2018, the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched a new US$37 million project today that will benefit more than 30 million people with scaled-up early warning systems, training on glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF) preparedness and response, and the creation of new protective infrastructure.
