Meningitis in Yemen

The suspected bacterial meningitis cases continue to be monitored. From 01 January to 06 August 2017 (Epidemiological week 31), a total of 2,467 clinically diagnosed cases including 37 related deaths (Case fatality ratio- 1.5%) were reported through the Electronic Disease Early Warning System (eDEWS) in Yemen.

Meningitis in Yemen

The Ministry of Health in Yemen, in collaboration with WHO, are closely monitoring the epidemiological pattern of the ongoing reported cases of meningitis in Yemen. Since the beginning of the year up to 8 July 2017 (Epidemiological week 27), a total of 2,146 suspected cases have been reported through the electronic early warning surveillance system (eDEWS) in the country (Please see the graph).

Implementation of Event Based Surveillance in Jordan

Jordan is conducting a training workshop for the launch of event based surveillance (EBS) for acute respiratory infections. The workshop to be conducted in Amman, Jordan, from 24 to 27 July 2017 will target public health officers responsible for surveillance and response at governorate level and health professionals from all secondary and tertiary level hospitals in the country.

Resurgence of Cholera Outbreak in Yemen

The current cholera outbreak in Yemen, started in October 2016, showed a sign of decline in the first three months of the year. An upsurge of cases and deaths were recorded from 27 April 2017. As of 28 May 2017, a cumulative total of 88,849 suspected cholera cases including 657 associated deaths (CFR: 0.73%) were recorded from 261 districts in 19 governorates across the country since the beginning of the outbreak in 2016

Implementation of Electronic EWARN Platform in EMRO

In collaboration with ITT unit of the Regional Office, the IHM unit of the Department of WHO Health Emergen- cies Programme in EMRO is developing a regional electronic platform for EWARN (Early warning Alert and Re- sponse Network) for humanitarian crisis affected settings.

ICRC/MoFA – (Islamabad) Seven Pakistanis who were stranded in Yemen for more than a decade were repatriated and reunited with their families in Pakistan. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) facilitated their return at the request of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Government of Pakistan. The process of bringing them back to Pakistan was initiated by the Embassy of Pakistan in Sanaa.

La situation relative au Criquet pèlerin est restée très préoccupante au Yémen en juillet. Un nombre indéterminé d’essaims a continué à se former dans l’intérieur. Au moins un essaim s’est déplacé dans les hautes-terres centrales, tandis que des groupes d’ailés se déplaçaient vers la côte méridionale. Les fortes pluies et les inondations survenues dans la plupart des zones fi n juillet permettront à la reproduction de se poursuivre et de s’étendre aux plaines côtières de la mer Rouge.
