Highlights

• The number of refugees, migrants and asylum seekers registered in Turkey increased slightly in April, to over 3.3 million. Of these, nearly 3 million are Syrians– including over 1.3 million children – while the remaining 310,000 are nationals primarily from Iraq and Afghanistan.

• UNICEF established 30 child-friendly interview rooms in 23 cities to promote the best interests of children in contact with the law, including protection against hardship and stress associated with judicial proceedings.

Highlights

  • In September, UNICEF and the Ministry of National Education (MoNE) prepared for the 2016-2017 school year, which began on 19 September – with a focus on student registration and scaled-up teacher training.

  • In western Turkey, an average of 113 refugees and migrants made the sea journey from Turkey to Greece, every day.

  • As 2016 enters its last quarter, the priority will be on fulfilling UNICEF’s commitments this year while planning the humanitarian response for 2017.

Turkish Red Crescent responds to country-wide disasters and emergencies in coordination with National Disaster Management through 9 District and 24 Local Disaster Management & Operation Centers. The Disaster Response Activities are conducted with the involvement of 260 disaster relief staff and other staff that work in other units of the institution across country.

Throughout 2013, there were approximately 134 emergencies as a result of the natural and man-made disasters. The emergencies and disasters responded by the Turkish Red Crescent in 2013 are as follows:
