In 2017, Humanitarian Response Plans (HRPs) in the MENA region requested US$7.4 billion. The total amount received to date is $3.6 billion (49%), which leaves a shortfall of $3.8 billion (51%).
The Syria Regional Refugee and Resilience Plan (3RP) requested US$5.58 billion. The total amount received to date is $2.59 billion (46%), which leaves a shortfall of $2.99 billion (54%).

No new wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases were reported in the past week. The total number of WPV1 cases for 2017 remains six. The most recent case in the country had onset of paralysis on 10 July, from Zabul province, neighbouring Kandahar province and Pakistan.

Following flooding in Benue, Nigeria, the World Health Organization has deployed its polio infrastructure across the state to strengthen disease prevention efforts.

The Syria Regional Refugee and Resilience Plan (3RP) requested US$5.58 billion. The total amount received to date is $2.17 billion (39%), which leaves a shortfall of $3.40 billion (61%).

Pakistan and Afghanistan polio eradication teams convened last week in Islamabad to follow up on the southern corridor (Quetta Block – Greater Kandahar) joint planning for the upcoming low transmission season. The meeting was attended by the national teams as well as the staff from the southern region of Afghanistan and Balochistan province of Pakistan.
The first report of the Transition Independent Monitoring Board (TIMB) has now been published, following the group’s first meeting last month. The TIMB has been established at the request of the Polio Oversight Board (POB) to independently monitor and guide the polio transition process, especially in the 16 countries prioritized for transition planning. The group’s next meeting will be held in London,

No new wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases were reported in the past week. The total number of WPV1 cases for 2017 remains four. The most recent WPV1 case had onset of paralysis on 16 April from Nawzad district, Hilmand province.
The Migration Country Profiles project aspires to contribute to a better understanding of migratory trends across Africa and the Middle East towards Europe. The project focuses specifically on the 2016 top-ten countries of origin of migrants and six key countries of transit that migrants are likely to take before embarking on the Mediterranean or Aegean sea journeys.
The profiles take particular consideration the push factors of migration, including human rights, conflict, and development contexts of each country of origin and transit.
In Syria, 15 new cases of circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) were reported in the past week, bringing the total number of cVDPV2 cases in the country to 17. Sixteen of the 17 cases are from Mayadeen district, Deir-Al-Zour governorate, and one case is from Raqua district, Raqua governorate. All cases had onset of paralysis between 3 March and 23 May.
The 14th report of the Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) has been published, following the group’s meeting in May.

In Syria, a circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) outbreak has been confirmed. The virus strain was isolated from two cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) and one healthy contact, from Deir-Ez-Zor governorate. See the ‘Syrian Arab Republic’ section below for more information.
