Somali Islamic scholars held a two day meeting in December to discuss the state of polio eradication and how to protect Somali children from all vaccine-preventable diseases.

Introduction

The gFSC Cash & Markets WG (CMWG) main purpose is to support Food Security clusters through development of tools and guidance and global advocacy for country level needs. In view of this, in April 2015 the CMWG mapped and gathered information on cash activities and cash WGs at country-level in which the FS clusters are involved. This information was also used to shape the agenda of the first Cluster Coordinators’ Retreat held in Rome in July 2015.

La situation relative au Criquet pèlerin s’est améliorée en mars le long des deux rives de la mer Rouge suite aux opérations de lutte et au dessèchement des conditions. Néanmoins, il subsiste un risque que des groupes d’ailés et peut-être quelques petits essaims puissent se déplacer dans les aires de reproduction printanière de l’intérieur de l’Arabie saoudite et du Yémen, où une reproduction est possible.

  • A wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) case has been confirmed in Kenya, the first WPV in the country since July 2011, with onset of paralysis 30 April. The location is a refugee camp in the Dadaab area, close to the border with Somalia, where a child was paralysed by polio near the capital Mogadishu on 18 April. Outbreak response activities are being planned. See ‘Horn of Africa’ section for more.

  • In Somalia, a new circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) from January 2013 was reported.
  • This latest case is confirmation that the cVDPV2 outbreak from 2011 in south-central Somalia is ongoing. In 2012, this outbreak had also spread across the border into neighbouring Kenya. Outbreak response continues to be implemented. See ‘Horn of Africa’ section below for more.

Much of the Horn of Africa continuous to face the largest humanitarian crisis in the world today, in terms of scale and and severity, with more than 13 million people being severely affected and still in urgent need of humanitarian aid: in Somalia (4 million), Kenya (4.3 million), Ethiopia (4.8 million) and Djibouti (about 200 000)(OCHA, 11/12/11).

DOHA, 21 November 2011 – UNICEF Deputy Executive Director a.i. Rima Salah has just concluded a one-week trip to the Gulf to strengthen cooperation in responding to humanitarian crises.

"We had very good discussions with senior representatives of Governments, international organizations and other partners,” said Dr. Salah. “We look forward to working with them to realize the enormous potential to save and improve the lives of children, especially in the Horn of Africa, Pakistan and Yemen.”

The Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs will allocate EUR 23.6 million of emergency aid by the end of this year. The new decisions made by Minister for International Development Heidi Hautala will raise Finland’s total humanitarian contribution to more than EUR 90 million in 2011. Alongside the alleviation of acute distress situations, Finland lays emphasis on finding long-term solutions.

Finland directs humanitarian assistance to Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.

Anti-Poverty Week was established in Australia as an expansion of the UN's annual international Anti-Poverty Day on October 17.

Anti-Poverty Week aims to:

  • increase public understanding of the causes and consequences of poverty and hardship around the world and in Australia

  • encourage research, discussion and action to address these problems, including action by individuals, communities, organisations and governments.
