Situation Overview

In keeping with previous years, humanitarian response has continued to be defined by conflict in the first half of 2017 with equally unacceptably high numbers of civilian casualties (‐1 percent) and a steady rise in armed clashes (+4 percent) if compared to the same period last year, despite an overall reduction in displacement (‐15 percent).

Description of the disaster

Continuous heavy rains and snowfalls broke the record of many years in Baluchistan province, and caused widespread flooding across 3 districts of Baluchistan from 17 to 22 January 2017. Government declared the emergency in 3 most affected districts and called for assistance for 60,000 families that were affected by onset of disaster situation in Baluchistan. Government also requested PRCS to support affected population.

2016: The total number of individuals displaced by conflict in 2016 increased to 661,287 as joint assessment teams finalise assessments of those displaced last year. This remains the highest number on record, and a 41 per cent increase on the 470,000 displaced in 2015.

2017: 88,481 individuals have been verified as displaced, with 29 provinces recording some level of forced displacement.

The total number of individuals displaced by conflict in 2016 has risen again slightly from last week to 653,294 as joint teams finalise assessments of those displaced last year.

In 2017 so far, 26,089 individuals have been verified as displaced, with 21 provinces recording some level of forced displacement. The provinces of highest displacement so far are Nangarhar, Kandahar, Faryab, Hilmand and Zabul.
