Nairobi, 4 October 2006 - Prompted by the magnitude and growing number of emergencies in recent years, WFP has launched a new humanitarian response "Network", with strategic hubs in Africa, Europe, MiddleEast, Asia and Latin America.
The Network is designed to meet the escalating challenges of sudden humanitarian emergencies which can sometimes strike almost simultaneously.
Just one year ago, in Guatemala, thousands of people were victimised by the effects of Hurricane Stan and just a few days later, Pakistan was hit by a massive earthquake.

INDONESIA -CENTRAL JAVA AND YOGYAKARTA - EARTHQUAKE AND MT MERAPI VOLCANO
On 27 May, an earthquake measuring 5.9 on Richter scale struck Yogyakarta Province. The epicentre was approximately 37.2 km south of Yogyakarta at a depth of 33 kilometres. The most affected districts were Bantul and Kulonprogo south of Yogyakarta. The death toll stands at 5,778. The number of injuries stands at 37,912. 205,888 homes have been completely destroyed.

The number of people affected by disasters continued to rise in 2005.The year began with the response to the South East Asia tsunami and finished with the response to the South Asia earthquake. Each year, one in five WHO Member States experiences a crisis that endangers the health of its people. Estimates indicate that more than 150 million people were directly affected by natural disasters.

The Pakistan Earthquake Humanitarian Fund and the Katrina Hurricane Relief Fund have collected more than 570 thousand dollars. Both funds were officially closed Monday by the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Retired Major General Pehin Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Mohammad who is also the adviser for both funds.
Both funds were handed over the donation from three government departments. The Mosque Affairs Department donated more than 31 thousand 990 dollars to the Pakistan Earthquake Humanitarian Fund and nearly 4 thousand 300 dollars to the Katrina Hurricane Relief Fund.
SINGAPORE/ NEW YORK, 21 April (OCHA) - The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) today took part in launching the DHL Disaster Response Team (DRT) in Singapore. The DRT is a pool of some 80 DHL experts, specially trained to ensure that relief supplies reach people quickly and effectively in the case of a major natural disaster.

The Pakistan Earthquake Humanitarian Fund, Thursday received a donation of $102,940 dollars, while the Katrina Hurricane Relief Fund received about $20,180. With the latest contribution, the Pakistan Earthquake Humanitarian Fund has collected $419,270, while the Katrina Hurricane Relief Fund collected $75,870. Receiving the donations was the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Retired Major General Pehin Dato Seri Pahlawan Haji Mohammad who is the advisor for both funds.
This year was once again marked by several high profile disasters that are still, months later, affecting thousands in Pakistan, the Gulf of Mexico and elsewhere.
DRC: CHOLERA RELIEF
Heavy and irregular rainfall in recent months has caused flooding in the North Katanga Conference in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The excess water has carried a cholera outbreak with it. The North Katanga Conference has developed a community-based plan to stop the spread of this deadly epidemic which includes distributing life-saving medicines.
