13 October 2017 – Research findings released today on International Day for Disaster Reduction forecast a continued rise in homelessness among people in the world’s most disaster prone countries unless significant progress is made in managing disaster risk.

An unique modelling exercise based on the latest data covering 204 countries and territories calculates that sudden onset disasters such as floods and cyclones, are displacing on average 13.9 million people each year, excluding those involved in pre-emptive evacuations.

Countrywide Conflict Displacement

From 1 January to 8 October 2017, 266,689 people fled their homes due to conflict in Afghanistan, up by 2,600 people from the previous week. The province sheltering the highest number of displaced people is Kunduz (29,759), followed by Nangarhar (27,959), Badghis (22,635) and Baghlan (18,788).

In 2016, we increased our humanitarian efforts in some of the world’s most challenging environments. As the war in Syria entered its sixth year, our £26.6 million emergency response programme supported over three million vulnerable people living in Syria as well as refugees in three neighbouring countries. In Iraq and Yemen, as the crises continued to shatter lives, we provided life-saving aid, often in areas that other organisations are unable to access.

No new wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases were reported in the past week. The total number of WPV1 cases for 2017 remains six. The most recent case in the country had onset of paralysis on 10 July, from Zabul province, neighbouring Kandahar province and Pakistan.

From 1 January to 16 September 2017, 250,985 people have fled their homes due to conflict in Afghanistan. This is more than 21,000 people more than reported in the previous week, notably due to verification of earlier reports and assessments of displaced families.
