  • October saw the closure of four health facilities in the Eastern region and 35 in Urogzan province. In the Southern region, 45 health facilities were partially or completely closed, and of them 15 were later re-opened. Two health facilities were destroyed.

  • Mobile health services were provided by cluster partners, but some areas were inaccessible due to insecurity.

  • Ongoing conflict continued to displace families and individuals.

Deaths from Dengue in Pakistan

Pakistan is endemic for Dengue fever (DF) since 1994. The country faced a number of repeated outbreaks in different provinces during last two decades. The recorded peak transmission season of DF virus is during July to October/ November. This year an outbreak was reported from the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 69 deaths reported from this outbreak so far.

2 November 2017 – Pakistan has launched the first sub-national immunization days (SNIDs) campaign of the current low transmission season on 30 October 2017, targeting more than 21 million children under the age of 5. The campaign has taken place in a total of 95 districts/agencies/towns of the country. The majority of districts concluded the SNIDs on 2 November, while three districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including Chitral, Dir Lower and Dir Upper as well as Lahore will start the campaign on 6 November.

Cholera in Yemen: Key questions

The cholera outbreak in Yemen continues to rage and from April to 28 October 2017, a total of 880,987 suspected cholera cases including 2,183 associated deaths with a case fatality rate of 0.25% were reported from Yemen. The cases were reported from almost all governorates (96% of the governorates were affected) and almost all districts (92% of the districts were affected).

  • The health cluster partners served 79,924 beneficiaries during September. Almost 62% of the beneficiaries were female and 38%were male.

  • A total of 26,357 returnees received outpatient diagnosis and emergency primary health care services, including TB screening, at the Torkham crossing point.

  • 258 families (1,311 individuals) of documented returnees arrived from Pakistan through Spin Boldak. 303 patients among documented returnees were treated by a health facility for which WHO supplied medicines.

This marks the first time global measles deaths have fallen below 100 000 per year.

26 October 2017 – The provincial health department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in Pakistan has reported an additional 12 430 suspected cases of dengue fever and 4 deaths since last week. So far, a cumulative total of 87 250 cases have been reported since 19 July 2017, including 18 892 laboratory-confirmed cases and 58 deaths.

The district Peshawar has reported the highest number of cases, with a current total of 78 844 suspected cases, including 16 991 confirmed cases and 53 deaths.

19 October 2017 – The provincial health department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province in Pakistan has reported a cumulative total of 74 820 cases of suspected dengue fever since the outbreak was first reported on 19 July 2017, including 15 828 laboratory-confirmed cases and 54 deaths.

The district of Peshawar has reported the highest number of cases, with a current total of 68 142 suspected cases, including 14 035 confirmed cases and 50 deaths reported from local health facilities.

First Conference on Acute Respiratory Infections in EMR

The World Health Organization, in partnership with Global Health Development (GHD), is launching the first Scientific Conference on Acute Respiratory Infection (ARI) in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. The conference will be held in Amman, Jordan, from 11 to 14 December 2017, in conjunction with the Fourth Meeting of the Eastern Mediterranean Acute Respiratory Infection Surveillance (EMARIS) Network.
