KEY UPDATES:

  • Conflict continued to displace families and individuals, which created pressure on health services around the country in November 2017. Due to the newly increased number of IDPs from Khogiani district in the Eastern region, the host communities of the surrounding areas were stretched with patients.

  • Number of closed health facilities was increased in the southern region due to the deteriorated security situation.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever in Afghanistan

The Ministry of Public Health in Afghanistan recently reported an increase in the number of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF) cases in the country. In 2017, a total of 237 cases of CCHF including 41 deaths (CFR: 17.2%) have been reported throughout 27 provinces.
Majority of these cases-71 cases including 13 associated deaths (CFR: 18.3%), were reported from the capital city, Kabul.

Dengue in Sudan

The Federal Ministry of Health in Sudan has recently reported an increase in suspected dengue fever cases during the period of epi week 40 and 47. A total of 90 suspected cases including 2 deaths (CFR: 2.2%) were reported across the states of Khartoum, Kassala, East Darfur, West Darfur, South Kordofan and Red Sea. The highest number of cases (80 suspected cases with no associated death) was reported in Kassala state.

Diphtheria in Yemen

A significant increase in suspected diphtheria cases has recently been reported in Yemen between epidemiological week no 33 and 44. A total number of 118 suspected cases including 10 deaths (CFR: ing 9 associated deaths (CFR: 8.7%). 8.5%), were reported in 10 governorates of the country. Majority of these cases– about 103 were reported from Ibb governorate, including 9 associated deaths (CFR: 8.7%).

Cholera Roadmap

Cholera morbidity and mortality continues in communities with high vulnerability imposed by tragedies such as disasters and conflicts. Currently Yemen is facing the world’s largest cholera outbreak, with over 900,000 suspected cases and more than 2,200 associated deaths reported since April 2016. Over 1000 cholera associated deaths were reported globally from the cholera endemic countries this year.

KEY UPDATES:

  • October saw the closure of four health facilities in the Eastern region and 35 in Urogzan province. In the Southern region, 45 health facilities were partially or completely closed, and of them 15 were later re-opened. Two health facilities were destroyed.

  • Mobile health services were provided by cluster partners, but some areas were inaccessible due to insecurity.

  • Ongoing conflict continued to displace families and individuals.

Deaths from Dengue in Pakistan

Pakistan is endemic for Dengue fever (DF) since 1994. The country faced a number of repeated outbreaks in different provinces during last two decades. The recorded peak transmission season of DF virus is during July to October/ November. This year an outbreak was reported from the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 69 deaths reported from this outbreak so far.

2 November 2017 – Pakistan has launched the first sub-national immunization days (SNIDs) campaign of the current low transmission season on 30 October 2017, targeting more than 21 million children under the age of 5. The campaign has taken place in a total of 95 districts/agencies/towns of the country. The majority of districts concluded the SNIDs on 2 November, while three districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa including Chitral, Dir Lower and Dir Upper as well as Lahore will start the campaign on 6 November.

Cholera in Yemen: Key questions

The cholera outbreak in Yemen continues to rage and from April to 28 October 2017, a total of 880,987 suspected cholera cases including 2,183 associated deaths with a case fatality rate of 0.25% were reported from Yemen. The cases were reported from almost all governorates (96% of the governorates were affected) and almost all districts (92% of the districts were affected).
