ISLAMABAD, 29 December (IRIN) - Measles has broken out in three refugee camps in south-central Pakistan along the Afghan border. "Till Wednesday we had seen some 58 cases. Of these, 17 were in Kili Faizo, a staging post near Chaman on the Pakistan-Afghan border, while 38 were in Roghani and another three cases were detected in the Landa Karez camp," Ribka Amsalu, a medical coordinator with Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) told IRIN on Friday in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.

Islamabad (dpa) - A United Nations team left Pakistan on Friday for Jalalabad to assess the security situation in eastern Afghanistan for resuming its humanitarian operations in the region.

Relative stability has reportedly returned to Kandahar in southern Afghanistan but the adjacent Helmand province was still embroiled in factional strife, the spokesperson of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Fatoumata Kaba, said in Islamabad.

Catholic Relief Services' South Asia Regional Director, Sean Callahan, just returned from a visit to local Afghan partner Coordination of Afghan Relief (CoAR) in Kabul, Afghanistan and offered the following reflections on what he saw there: "The Muslim Eid al-Fitr holiday is coming and some businesses are open in the city. People are slowly testing the limits of their new freedom," explained Callahan. "We visited with our local partner and saw a few relief distributions in the area. CoAR is really committed and working hard under difficult circumstances."

KARACHI, Dec 28 (Reuters) - Pakistan's hopes to supply 300,000 tonnes of wheat to Afghanistan are fading after a U.S. wheat donation to feed Afghans driven from their homes by war and drought, a senior Pakistani official said on Friday.

However, World Food Programme (WFP) spokesman Wagdi Othman said the U.S. donation for Afghanistan would not affect the WFP's agreement with Pakistan.

The U.S donation to the WFP was due to reach the war-torn country by the end of January.

ISLAMABAD, Dec 28: The federal government on Friday agreed on distributing an amount of Rs2 billion to all four provinces for rehabilitation and relief operations in the drought-affected areas , Dawn reliably learnt.

A meeting held at the planning division, which was also attended by the representatives of all four provinces, decided to release Rs2 billion as first instalment to the province from a fund of Rs10 billion earlier approved for relief operations, an official said.

DFID

As part of the UK's ongoing commitment to the Afghan people DFID is today announcing an additional £20 million of assistance. The money is to be deployed to help underpin the Interim Administration and help start the rehabilitation and reconstruction effort.

DFID has already pledged US$3 million to the UNDP's fund to assist the establishment and running of the Interim Administration.
