PAKISTAN FLOODS ASPK81
Appeal Target : US$ 86,080

Geneva, March 23, 1998

Dear Colleagues,

Torrential rains and flash floods wreaked havoc in Pakistan’s largest but least populated province of Balochistan, earlier this month.

20 Mar 1998 description

Last week, the International Federation appealed for 775,000 Swiss francs for flood relief operations in the Pakistani province of Baluchistan. The funds will be used to assist 40,000 of the most vulnerable survivors of recent flash floods that swept away more than 100 villages and to stockpile relief materials in the region. Some 300 fatalities from the floods have been confirmed but another 1,500 people are missing and feared dead.

At least 150 bodies have been recovered and over one-thousand people are still missing three days after flash floods struck a remote region of southwest Pakistan.

Government officials say helicopters were evacuating stranded people to makeshift tent shelters and dropping food for others trapped by the floods.

Pakistan's Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, is visiting the region where the floods, triggered by unusually heavy spring rains, are receding.

ISLAMABAD, Feb 20 (Reuters) - A severe earthquake jolted Islamabad and parts of northern Pakistan on Friday, but there were no immediate reports of damage, government officials and witnesses said.

A government seismic centre in the northwestern town of Peshawar said the quake measured 6.1 on the Richter scale, a force which can cause widespread damage, and was centred near the Pakistan-Afghan border.

The tremor, the second in the region in a week, struck at 5.18 p.m.
