There is no day that goes past without the impact of an improvised explosive device (IED) making headlines around the world. Of all explosive weapons used, the IED is the most widespread, the most harmful and the most pernicious. Based on the belief that to overcome a problem, we must first understand it, this monitor is a small step in seeking to address the terrible realities of today.
It is a monitor that is, also, a response to a call to action.

The London Family Planning Summit was co-hosted today by Priti Patel, the Secretary of State for International Development, Melinda Gates, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and Natalia Kanem, UN Population Fund. The Summit focused on practical measures to reduce costs and increase availability for the millions of women who want contraception, but can’t afford or get hold of it.

In May 2017, Action on Armed Violence recorded 3,223 deaths and injuries caused by explosive violence around the world, as reported in English-language media. Civilians accounted for 82% (2,649) of the deaths and injuries recorded.

This represents a 48% increase in the number of civilians killed or injured compared to April 2017, when there were 1,794 civilian deaths and injuries.
