A key challenge faced by humanitarian agencies is how to ensure that limited available resources are allocated where they are most needed and are efficiently delivered in a principled manner. Decisions to allocate resources must strike a balance between meeting the immediate needs of crisis affected communities and supporting efforts to strengthen resilience and response preparedness to future emergencies.

  • The pace of general and food inflation in the region slowed in May increasing 2.7 and 2.5 percent, respectively.

  • In Afghanistan, greater internal displacements of food insecure populations are expected in the coming winter because of insufficient food availability and barriers to food access.

  • Stabilization policy efforts in India continue to mitigate the price volatility of vegetables, in particular for onion and potato.

  • In India, unseasonal rains damaged 8.5 million hectares of crops, mainly wheat. The Government has responded mainly by increasing input subsidies and facilitating the processing of insurance claims.

  • Thailand has launched a loan relief programme for affected farmers through the Bank of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives.

  • In Pakistan, potato prices have fallen by 45 percent year on year as farmers switch from growing wheat to potatoes.

  • General inflation in the region continued to slow, falling to 3.7 percent from 3.8 percent, while food price inflation was unchanged.

  • Nominal rice prices rose 7.7 percent in South Asia in October.

  • In Afghanistan retail prices for wheat and wheat flour fell by a respective 2 percent and 4.9 percent in expectation of an above-average harvest.

  • Rice prices in India rose 18 percent year-on-year.

  • Regional general inflation was 6.1 percent in May and food price inflation 5 percent, ending five consecutive months in which the pace of inflation slowed.

  • Regional rice price index increased by 5.3 percent in nominal terms as prices continued to rise in South Asia (including India), East Asia and South East Asia.

  • Wheat price indices in South Asia fell by 6.8 percent driven by an 8.3 percent drop in Pakistan.

The number of Syrian refugees continued to rise, amounting to a total of 1,175,915 as of 25 March, according to UNHCR.

On 6 March at least 27 people were killed in a standoff between approximately 200 members of the Royal Sulu Army, an armed Islamic group from the southern Philippines who have occupied the Sabah region in Malaysia since 9 February, and the Government of Malaysia.

In Syria, intense fighting was reported in Raqqa, Homs and Quneitra. The number of Syrian refugees continued to rise, amounting to a total of 1,086,975 as of 11 March.
