Over 142,000 people in ten countries will benefit from fourteen projects totaling $3.7 committed by Canadian Foodgrains Bank in November.

The projects are being implemented by Foodgrains Bank members ADRA Canada, Canadian Baptist Ministries, Emergency Relief and Development Overseas (ERDO), Mennonite Central Committee Canada, Presbyterian World Service & Development and World Renew, in collaboration with their local partners.

Some 37 countries, 29 of which are in Africa, require external assistance for food, according to the report.

Dengue in Sudan

The Federal Ministry of Health in Sudan has recently reported an increase in suspected dengue fever cases during the period of epi week 40 and 47. A total of 90 suspected cases including 2 deaths (CFR: 2.2%) were reported across the states of Khartoum, Kassala, East Darfur, West Darfur, South Kordofan and Red Sea. The highest number of cases (80 suspected cases with no associated death) was reported in Kassala state.

    However, dryness remains in parts of the northern Somali region of eastern Ethiopia. Moisture recovery is unlikely in the northern region, as seasonal rains are expected to be concentrated towards the south through November.

Diphtheria in Yemen

A significant increase in suspected diphtheria cases has recently been reported in Yemen between epidemiological week no 33 and 44. A total number of 118 suspected cases including 10 deaths (CFR: ing 9 associated deaths (CFR: 8.7%). 8.5%), were reported in 10 governorates of the country. Majority of these cases– about 103 were reported from Ibb governorate, including 9 associated deaths (CFR: 8.7%).

Cholera Roadmap

Cholera morbidity and mortality continues in communities with high vulnerability imposed by tragedies such as disasters and conflicts. Currently Yemen is facing the world’s largest cholera outbreak, with over 900,000 suspected cases and more than 2,200 associated deaths reported since April 2016. Over 1000 cholera associated deaths were reported globally from the cholera endemic countries this year.

  1. Since late October, above-average rainfall has mitigated moisture deficits across Somalia and eastern Kenya. However, dryness remains in parts of the northern Somali region of eastern Ethiopia.
  2. Below-average rainfall since mid-October have resulted in considerable moisture deficits across parts of the Free State, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga regions of South Africa and in Lesotho and Swaziland.

A lack of decent toilets and clean water causes diarrhoeal diseases that, on average, claim the lives of almost 800 children every day – one every two minutes.

The health impacts of poor sanitation trap people in poverty, making it difficult to get an education or to work to support their families.

Deaths from Dengue in Pakistan

Pakistan is endemic for Dengue fever (DF) since 1994. The country faced a number of repeated outbreaks in different provinces during last two decades. The recorded peak transmission season of DF virus is during July to October/ November. This year an outbreak was reported from the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 69 deaths reported from this outbreak so far.

  2. Heavy rainfall continues to sustain the risk for flooding in southeastern Kenya and northeastern Tanzania.

As of 31 October, United Nations-coordinated appeals and refugee response plans within the Global Humanitarian Overview (GHO) require US$24.1 billion to meet the humanitarian needs of 105.1 million particularly vulnerable people of an estimated 145 million crisis-affected people in 39 countries. The appeals are funded at $11.8 billion, leaving a shortfall of $12.3 billion. This is $1.5 billion less than the gap reported at the end of September 2017.
