SITUATION. Des ailés isolés étaient présents dans le centre et l’est de l’Algérie.

PRÉVISIONS. Une reproduction à petite échelle aura lieu dans le Sahel septentrional de la Mauritanie, du Mali, du Niger, du Tchad et le sud de l’Algérie, et des larves en faibles effectifs apparaîtront. On ne s’attend à aucun développement signifi catif.

CALM SITUATION. Isolated adults were present in central and eastern Algeria. FORECAST. Small-scale breeding will occur in the northern Sahel of Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad and southern Algeria with very low numbers of hoppers appearing. No significant developments are likely.

The Pakistani government also held its 2018 general election last week, which was marred by violence both by those inside and outside the political process. Demonstrations were also reported across the Philippines to mark President Rodrigo Duterte’s state of the nation address.

Overall levels of political violence and protest events in South and southeast Asia dropped last week compared to the previous week. Key events in Asia last week included intense fighting between the Taliban and Islamic State (IS) in Afghanistan, ongoing election violence in Pakistan, a sharp spike in drug-related killings in the Philippines, and continuing clashes between state forces and several Ethnic Armed Organisations (EAOs) in Myanmar.

  • 3,529 new refugees, asylum-seekers and migrants were counted in Serbia on 22 July (compared to 3,357 two weeks ago), of which 3,124 (i.e 88%) were accommodated in 18 governmental centres (below chart refers, also see June 2018 Site Profiles). Some 400 were observed outside the centres: 150 in Belgrade City, another 150 camping close to borders with Croatia or Hungary and up to 100 in Loznica, close to the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.

At least four communities across the Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) are better prepared to fight floods this year. Floods and flash floods in the Hindu Kush Himalaya cause considerable loss of lives and property in downstream communities, particularly during the monsoon. To address such flood risks and to enhance the resilience of vulnerable communities, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and its partner organizations have set up community-based flood early warning systems (CBFEWS).

(1) Nicaragua

Tomorrow, Wednesday, will mark three months since demonstrations began in Nicaragua, initially against planned pension reforms but which have evolved into protests against President Daniel Ortega’s government.

The violence that has to date left an estimated 280 people dead and 1830 injured has been overwhelmingly perpetrated by the State and by pro-government armed elements. Those killed include at least 19 police officers.

This action has immense potential to help the world harness the benefits of regular migration while safeguarding against the dangers of irregular movements that place people at risk.

Last week in Afghanistan, a suicide bomber reportedly killed and wounded around 40 people in Jalalabad. Most of the victims belong to Afghanistan’s Sikh and Hindu minority groups and included the only Sikh electoral candidate in the upcoming general election. Additionally, the arrest of a district militia leader and close aide of Vice President Dostum led to a number of demonstrations in several provinces throughout the week, including a riot in Maymana City in which one demonstrator was reportedly killed.

Last week was marked by major protests in Afghanistan, ongoing election turmoil in Pakistan, and militant violence in Indonesia. In Afghanistan, following the end of the ceasefire, levels of political violence further increased by 20% compared to the previous week, which is a total hike of over 78% compared to the week of the ceasefire. In light of this spike in violence, people across 16 provinces took to the streets last week to demand peace negotiations between the Taliban and the Afghan government and an end to the war.
