FEATURE: Syria

As many as 273,000 people newly displaced, half of whom are minors, were recorded between 15 December and 29 January in central and northern Idleb and northern Hama due to a government-led offensive in the governorates (OCHA, 7 Feb 2018; OCHA, 23 Jan 2018; Save the Children, 17 Jan 2018). Parts of the contested areas have reportedly been emptied of civilians (OCHA, 16 Jan 2018). Most of the population in the town of Saraqab, in Idleb province, has been displaced (OCHA, 7 Feb 2018).

Mauritania hosts over 2,000 urban refugees and asylumseekers and more than 50,000 Malian refugees in Mbera, a camp established in 2012 in the arid south-eastern region close to the Malian border.
Despite the conclusion of a peace agreement in 2015, large-scale returns of Malian refugees are not expected due to persistent violence in northern Mali. In January alone, 1,187 new arrivals were registered in Mbera. As the situation in northern Mali continues to be unstable, Mauritania struggles to cope with the growing needs of new refugees and the vulnerable host communities.

Le 4 février, des hommes armés ont tenté d'attaquer un site accueillant des personnes déplacées dans la ville d'Alindao, dans la préfecture de Basse-Kotto, au Sud-Est du pays.
Les forces de maintien de la paix de l'ONU ont repoussé l’attaque. Les assaillants sont soupçonnés d’avoir voulu prendre leur revanche suite aux combats intercommunautaires qui ont eu lieu dans la région récemment.

ARMED ATTACK ON IDP CAMP THWARTED
Armed assailants on 4 February attempted to attack a site hosting the displaced in Alindao town in the south-eastern Basse Kotto prefecture. UN peacekeepers repelled the attackers who are believed to have been on a revenge mission following inter-communal fighting in the area recently.
