Peacebuilding Commission
2018 Annual Session, AM & PM Meetings

With the rising cost of inaction in the Sahel, the international community must keep its eyes on the prospect of peace, the Peacebuilding Commission heard today as it opened its fourth annual session.

The Sahel will be a “litmus test” for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, said Deputy Secretary‑General Amina Mohammed in her opening remarks. “If we fail for the most vulnerable, we fail a generation of young people and the future of peace in the subregion.”

Message from our Regional Director

Despite numerous humanitarian challenges in 2017 in Africa, there were also a number of heart-warming accomplishments. A case in point, was when a local response of Red Crescent teams—and other partners—curbed Somalia's cholera outbreak through the power of local volunteers and shared international expertise. In terms of support to our members, 36 National Societies were able to kick start initiatives that built their capacity through seed grants.

Despite the conclusion of a peace agreement in 2015, large-scale returns of Malian refugees are not expected due to persistent violence in northern Mali. In September alone, 193 new arrivals were registered in Mbera camp.

Les conflits impliquant des éleveurs1 sont en augmentation en Afrique de l’Ouest, mais pas de manière uniforme

Our analysis shows that millions of ‘people caught in crisis’ - people living in conflict, and/or who are displaced within their own countries or across borders – are in fact being left behind. Failure to take action now means that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will not be met, undermining the credibility of the international community and leaving millions to die unnecessarily.

Despite the conclusion of a peace agreement in 2015, large-scale returns of Malian refugees are not expected due to persistent violence in northern Mali. In July alone, 233 new arrivals were registered in Mbera camp.

As the situation in northern Mali continues to be unstable, Mauritania continues to receive Malian refugees and to support refugees and vulnerable host communities.

There was an overall downward trend in the levels of organised violence and protests on the African continent during the month of August 2018 compared to the rest of the year. There are fewer reported events than is typical for August based on previous years, but this pattern may still be reversed due to reporting lags.
