This revised Emergency Appeal seeks a total 1,329,991 million Swiss francs, representing a reduction by 361,215 CHF over the initial budget of 1,693,785 million Swiss francs. This reduction reflects the new operational strategy of the Mauritanian Red Crescent (MRC) following the geographic repositioning and implementation constraints. The revised Emergency Appeal focuses on Livelihoods and Health activities, with no significant change in the response sectors in relation to the initial plan of action.

Mauritania hosts over 2,000 urban refugees and asylumseekers and more than 56,000 Malian refugees in Mbera camp established in 2012 in the arid south-eastern region close to the Malian border.

Despite the conclusion of a peace agreement in 2015, large-scale returns of Malian refugees are not expected due to persistent violence in northern Mali. In July alone, 19 new arrivals were registered in Mbera camp.

HIGHLIGHTS

More than two and a half years after its signing, the 2015 Peace Accord and Reconciliation in Mali still lacks necessary support and its implementation has been minimal.

The volatile security environment in northern and central Mali as well as in the border areas continues to trigger forced displacements inside Mali and into neighboring countries. This situation impacting on the protection environment and limiting humanitarian access as well as access to basic services such as health, documentation, shelter, water, education and food.

Highlights

▪ Based on reports received by end of May 2018, 10,650 children with SAM were admitted for treatment throughout the country (33% of the estimated national caseload at 32,244 SAM cases for 2018). 6,139 SAM cases were admitted in the 21 emergency districts (30% of indirect coverage compared to the estimated annual caseload of 20,455 SAM cases).
A national mass screening campaign identified 2,249 children with SAM (MUAC < 115 mm) in June.
