GENEVA (10 August 2015) – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedoms of peaceful assembly and of association, Maina Kiai, today called upon the Mauritanian Parliament to reject the draft law on associations approved by the Council of Ministers last month without public consultations.

“While I support Mauritania’s efforts to reform and improve laws that govern the work of civil society, I am concerned that the bill, as it stands, threatens the exercise of fundamental freedoms in the country, in particular the right to freedom of association,” Mr. Kiai said.

NOUAKCHOTT (27 February 2014) – The United Nations Special Rapporteur on slavery, Gulnara Shahinian, today hailed Mauritania’s commitment and progress in the fight against slavery, but called on the authorities “to take more vigorous measures to eliminate slavery and to fully implement the laws and policies.”

Ms. Shahinian's call comes at the end of a follow-up official visit to the country to assess new developments and the initiatives taken by the Mauritanian authorities in response to her previous recommendations.

1 . The present report is submitted pursuant to resolution 22/28 by which the Human Rights Council invite the High Commissioner for human rights to present, at its twenty-third session, an update report on the situation of human rights in Mali. The report aims at providing information of the situation since the presentation of the last High Commissioner’s report to the Council, on 12 March 2013, and covers the period until 20 May 2013.

The Human Rights Council this morning adopted the outcomes of the Universal Periodic Review on Micronesia and Mauritania.

Jeem Lippwe, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Federated States of Micronesia to the United Nations in New York, said the challenges faced in addressing human rights were often exacerbated by the negative impact of climate change which threatened the right to be secure and the right to life.

I. Methodology for preparation of the report

1. The preparation of this report was the result of close cooperation between the Commission on Human Rights, Humanitarian Action and Relations with Civil Society (CDHAHRSC) and all the ministerial departments concerned, working together in the framework of an interministerial technical committee.

I. Introduction

1. In its resolution 10/12, the Human Rights Council requested the Advisory Committee to undertake a study on discrimination in the context of the right to food, including identification of good practices of anti-discriminatory policies and strategies, and to report on it to the thirteenth session of the Council.

2. At its first session, the Advisory Committee established a drafting group on the right to food, consisting of José Bengoa Cabello, Chinsung Chung, Latif H=FCseynov, Jean Ziegler and Mona Zulficar.
