IOM voluntary humanitarian returns from Libya: On 8 August 2018, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), reported that it had facilitated the return of 10,950 stranded migrants from Libya through its Voluntary Humanitarian Return (VHR) Programme, following an important increase in the number of detainees recorded in Libya. Among these, 9,636 were returned to countries in Central and West Africa.

Voluntary Return Assistance by International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Niger: As of July 2018, 8,000 refugees and migrants were rescued during 84 search and rescue operations. 90% of them were rescued near the border towns of Arlit and Assamaka. Half of the refugees and migrants who arrived at IOM Transit points in Niger had no identification documents.

Highlights in March and April

• In March and April, deportations of sub-Saharan migrants and refugees by Algerian authorities increased at the border with Mali and Niger. According to the Algerian Minister of the Interior and local authorities Nourredine Bedaoui, 27,000 Sub-Saharans have been expelled from Algeria since 2015.

• According to IOM, the number of migrants in transit in Segedine and coming out of Niger increased significantly in March and April, with 4,284 people identified in March and 4,395 in April, compared to 851 in February.

Highlights in January and February

  • In Niger, increasing insecurity in the Tillabéri region has led to an increase in internal displacement in the region.
    The number of IDPs tripled in the region in February.

  • In January, hundreds of sub-Saharan migrants were deported to the Tamanrasset camp in Algeria and transported to Arlit, then Agadez in Niger. Approximately 3,000 people were deported, mostly Nigerien but also from Nigeria, Cameroon, Mali and Guinea.

  • The African Regional Consultative Meeting on the Global Compact on Migration took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 26-27 October. Participants agreed upon recommendations and actionable commitments on the Global Compact and underscored the desire of member states to own the narrative of the African migration story.

The present text is an extended summary of a report produced by the Regional Mixed Migration Secretariat West Africa. The report examines mixed migration within, from and to West Africa and aims to gather available knowledge concerning people moving in mixed flows with the principal aim of identifying vulnerable groups and assessing their specific protection needs.

In December, 8,428 migrants and refugees arrived in Italy by sea via the central Mediterranean route.
Nationals from Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea accounted for the largest number of arrivals in December.

In December, an estimated 383 people died or went missing while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea. In 2016, 5,082 people had died or gone missing in while crossing the Mediterranean, surpassing the 3,777 people who lost their lives in 2015.

13,740 migrants and refugees arrived in Italy by sea via the central Mediterranean route despite worsening sea conditions. This is over four times the number who arrived by sea in Italy in November 2015. Nationals from Nigeria and Guinea accounted for the largest number of rescued migrants and refugee.

An estimated 718 people died or went missing while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea. By 30 November, 4,699 people had died or gone missing in 2016 while crossing the Mediterrane- an, surpassing the 3,771 people who lost their lives in 2015.

9,499 migrants and refugees from West Africa arrived in Italy using the Central Mediterranean Route, including 3,742 Nigerians, 1,150 Guineans, 1,006 Ivoirians, 895 Gambians, 886 Senegalese, 932 Malians, and 757 Ghanaians.

53 people lost their lives crossing the Mediterranean Sea, the lowest recorded number of deaths in the Mediterranean Sea this year. 3,179 people have died or gone missing while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea since January.

Movements towards Europe In June, 16,775 migrants and refugees from West Africa arrived in Italy using the Central Mediterranean Route, including 6,196 Nigerians, 2,289 Guineans, 2,088 Ivoirians, 1,908 Gambians, 1,482 Senegalese, 1,416 Malians, and 884 Ghanaians. A total of 70,222 migrants and refugees arrived in Italy via the Central Mediterranean Route between January and June 2016. Migrants and refugees from West Africa made up 54% of these movements in the first half of 2016 compared with 29% during the same period in 2015.
