Desert Locust outbreak continues on Eritrean Red Sea coast

A local outbreak is in progress on the central Red Sea coast in Eritrea where it developed as a result of good rainfall and green vegetation in November and December 2006. The infestations are limited to a small area near Shieb and Shelshela agricultural areas where groups of hoppers and adults are present. Hoppers are fledging and adults are laying eggs.

CAPE TOWN, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Immediate steps are needed to avert a potential catastrophe as climate change dries up water resources in drought affected areas, hitting poor farmers, a United Nations report said on Thursday.

September 5, 2003, Vienna, Austria - The OPEC Fund for International Development has distributed over 43,000 metric tons of food aid to towns and villages in nine African countries: Eritrea, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritania, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe that are affected by the current food crisis sweeping much of Africa. Under a special Food Aid Grant Account, the OPEC Fund has provided a total US$20 million to assist a number of countries in Africa severely affected by the worsening crisis.
