Cette plateforme de bailleurs de fonds renforcera la coordination de leurs actions au Sahel sur 5 secteurs clés.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Didier Reynders is pleased that Belgium will contribute to the prevention of terrorism in the Sahel countries Burkina Faso and Mauritania. Our country donates 250,000 euros within this context. The funding creates the possibility to give several training sessions in the fields of research- and investigative techniques, judicial cooperation and the combat against the financial flows of terrorism.

This booklet presents the Sahel Women’s Empowerment and Demographic Dividend (SWEDD) regional initiative. The SWEDD is the result of a joint response by the United Nations and the World Bank Group, is a response to a call made by the presidents of the six Sahel countries, Burkina Faso, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Mauritania and Niger.

The overall goal of the project is to accelerate the demographic transition, to spur the demographic dividend, and to reduce gender inequality in the Sahel region.

HIGHLIGHTS

• The West Africa 2015 growing season developed under an evolving El Nino event that will peak in late 2015. This region tends to have seasonal rainfall deficits in the more marginal areas during El Nino seasons.

• Accordingly, the first stages of the season (until mid July) were marked by pronounced rainfall deficits leading to delays in the start of the growing season and poor conditions for early crop development. This affected a wide region extending from Senegal, across Burkina and northern Nigeria, to Chad and eastern Niger.

On 18 November, Michel Kafando, was sworn in as Burkina Faso’s interim President. In compliance to the Charter of the Transition signed on 16 November, Mr. Kafando, a former Foreign Minister and diplomat has been chosen to oversee a one-year transition back to civilian rule in Burkina Faso.

1 mai 2014 – Le Secrétaire général des Nations Unies, Ban Ki-moon, a annoncé jeudi la nomination de Mme Hiroute Guebre Sellassie, de l'Éthiopie, comme sa nouvelle Envoyée spéciale et Chef du Bureau pour le Sahel. Elle succèdera à Romano Prodi, de l'Italie, qui a achevé sa mission le 31 janvier 2014.

Mme Guebre Sellassie apporte à ce poste une riche expérience de leadership, à la fois stratégique et managérial, dans la planification opérationnelle et la formulation de politiques en matière de paix et de sécurité en Afrique.

The problem of water resources in the Sahel is one of the major concerns for the African Development Bank. This challenge threatens agriculture, animal farming and food security for this region.

At the brink of the 2015 threshold, fixed for the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the rate of access to drinking water in the Sahel region is about 54 %, that of access to sanitation services is still below 30 % whereas decreases in renewal water resources are below 5%.

KEY MESSAGES

• February to April rainfall estimates (RFE) indicate that the onset of rains occurred earlier than normal this season with generally above normal rainfall levels in the bi-modal zone, as well as the southern part of the Guinean-Sudanian zone. According to medium term forecasts, an on time or early onset of the rains is expected for the northern part of the Guinean-Sudanian zone.
