NOUAKCHOTT, 21st July, 2018 (WAM) -- The Sheikha Fatima Global Humanitarian Campaign for Treating Women and Children has launched a pilot operation of its field hospital in Mauritania, under the guidance of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union (GWU), President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation (FDF).
Depriving someone of their freedom is a terrible violation. Modern slavery is a destructive, personal crime and an abuse of human rights. It is a widespread and profitable criminal industry but despite this it is largely invisible, in part because it disproportionately affects the most marginalised. This is why measuring this problem is so crucial in exposing and ultimately resolving it. The information contained within the Global Slavery Index is critical in these efforts.
WFP declared a pre-emptive L3 Emergency in the Sahel region on June 6, 2018.

While thousands of food-insecure families in Magta Lajar, in southern Mauritania, do not know where their next meal will be coming from, the situation is looking brighter for a women’s cooperative market garden in the village of Karama.
Despite the harsh desert climate and the dry season, tomatoes, onion, carrots, eggplants and cabbages are all growing well.
Tisslima Mint Moussa comes to the garden every day to water the plants, remove weeds, or harvest vegetables when they are fully ripe.

Recent developments in West Africa and the Sahel have been characterized by both volatility and democratic gains, the top United Nations official in the region told the Security Council today, warning that the latter “are not immune from reversal” and could be negatively impacted by the former.
Highlights in May and June
• In May, the Ambassador of European Union visited Mbera camp to have a first-hand account of EU-funded interventions carried out by UNHCR. In the framework of the EU-UNHCR mission, the Ambassador also visited WFP food and nutrition related activities.
Emergency preparedness saves lives, reduces the impact of crises on vulnerable people's livelihoods and is much more cost-effective than repeated humanitarian action. This story shows how WFP's early warning analysis led to early action in the Sahel.
PROJECTED FOOD ASSISTANCE NEEDS FOR JANUARY 2019
Deteriorating food security in central, southern and southeaster Mauritania
• Although consumer markets are well stocked with imported food (rice, oil, sugar, tea, pasta), the continuing rise in their prices since the month of Ramadan (May) is limiting poor households’ access to them. The fall in livestock prices and the lack of seasonal rural income-generating activities are reducing poor households’ seasonal incomes.

Many countries across the African continent face recurrent complex emergencies, frequent food insecurity, cyclical drought, and sudden-onset disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, and storms. In FY 2017, USAID/OFDA continued to respond to urgent needs resulting from disasters and support DRR programs that improve emergency preparedness and response capacity at local, national, and regional levels.
