1.GENERAL SITUATION

Total population of Mauritania, Senegal, Niger is 34 million. %37 of these people live under poverty line and in need. Said states also face with refugee issues. According to 2012 figures Mauritania hosts approximately 69.000 refugees, Nijer hosts 65.000 and Senegal hosts 20.000 refugees. On that point, humanitarian needs in these countries remains the main concern.

Countries in Africa have been working on improving their preparedness in the event of an Ebola outbreak. The WHO teams have provided simulated exercises in hospitals and technical training, for immediate emergency response and communication.

Mamo Jatta is a Regional Public Health and Surveillance Officer in The Gambia and, like many people living near Ebola affected countries, he is concerned the disease will enter his own country, “I recently visited the town where I grew up and wondered what would happen if Ebola were to hit us here, would we be ready for it?”

Local rice and sorghum are the most consumed food products by poor households in Mauritania followed by imported wheat which is a substitute that these households turn to the most.
Local rice is grown in the river valley (in the southern regions of Trarza, Brakna, Gorgol and Guidimakha). Sorghum is produced in all areas of production (rainfed) and in flood-recession areas.
However, a significant portion is imported from Mali and Senegal.

HIGHLIGHTS

· There have been 20 206 reported cases of Ebola virus disease, with 7905 reported deaths.

· Reported case incidence is fluctuating in Guinea and decreasing in Liberia, although Liberia reported more cases in the week ending 28 December than in the previous week.

· There are signs that the increase in incidence has slowed in Sierra Leone. However, the west of the country is still experiencing the most intense transmission of all affected countries.

· The United Kingdom has reported its first confirmed case of Ebola.

During the last few days Angolan security forces have arrested and arbitrarily detained several African nationals who they also subjected to cruel and inhuman treatment. Our organisations condemn these serious violations of migrants’ human rights and urge the Angolan authorities to put an end to this violence and to respect the international and regional legal instruments that Angola has ratified, and also draw the attention of the home countries of these migrants to the gravity of the situation.
