The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) monitors trends in staple food prices in countries vulnerable to food insecurity. For each FEWS NET country and region, the Price Bulletin provides a set of charts showing monthly prices in the current marketing year in selected urban centers and allowing users to compare current trends with both five-year average prices, indicative of seasonal trends, and prices in the previous year.

As of 30 December, the funding gap of the 2015 UN-coordinated inter-agency appeals is US$9.6 billion which means that 48 per cent of the required funds remain unmet.

During December, newly reported contributions to FTS totalled $736 million for humanitarian response: for response plans specifically, $81.7 million for Iraq, $80.6 million for Yemen, and $41.4 million for Niger. As reported to FTS by 30 December, over $1.7 billion of humanitarian funding remain in outstanding pledges (of which $404 million is allocated for the coordinated response plans).

  • In Mali, internally displaced persons and communities affected by the conflict continue to struggle to access food, water, health care, education, protection and livelihood opportunities. For many families, UNHCR and other humanitarian organisations are the sole providers of protection and essential services.

  • Almost four years after the conflict erupted, nearly 139,000 Malian refugees remain in neighbouring Burkina Faso, Mauritania and Niger. More recently, around 4,000 Malians have fled to Niger.

On 09 December UN agencies and partners launched the Sahel humanitarian appeal for 2016. A total of USD 1.9 billion in international assistance is required to support assistance to people in need across the region. Of these USD89.2 million are required to support response in Mauritania; including USD15.5 million to assist 377,000 people in food security and USD15.4million for nutrition assistance to 166,000 children and women malnourished or highly vulnerable and USD37.1 million for assistance to some 50,000 Malian refugees in Mberra camp.
