• During the past six months, the Sahel in West Africa has been facing the most serious Desert Locust threat since 2005. More than 50 million people were potentially affected in Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger.

• The situation is now gradually returning to normal in the northern Sahel where breeding has ended in Mali, Niger and Chad. As a result of control operations, only a few swarms formed in Niger and Chad and only small groups of adults moved to Algeria and Libya. Ground control operations are in progress in Niger, Mauritania and Morocco.

The rise of Islamic militancy in parts of the Sahel and Horn of Africa poses growing threats to regional stability. The appeal of these militants stems from their ability to tap into and persuade marginalized communities, particularly youth, that their grievances can be rectified by the establishment of a more pure Islamist culture.

Despite breakthroughs, Islamic militants in Africa typically do not possess great military power and may not seek to govern at the state level. Rather, they tend to be homegrown phenomena, focused on local concerns.

Britain will send lifesaving aid to over 500,000 people in the Sahel region of West Africa who have been hit by the current hunger crisis.

The new UK aid will will reach families in Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso and Mauritania.

Development Secretary Justine Greening announced the new support today, including high-protein food to treat 80,000 severely malnourished children.

The latest package of British assistance will support those that have been hit hardest by the current food and nutrition crisis.

DAKAR, 19 décembre 2012 (IRIN) - Selon les premières estimations des agences d'aide humanitaire, plus de 700 000 personnes pourraient être déplacées en cas d'intervention militaire dans le nord du Mali l'année prochaine.

Le chiffre inclut environ 300 000 déplacés internes (ils sont 198 550 aujourd'hui, ce qui représente une augmentation importante) et 407 000 réfugiés (ils sont 156 819 aujourd'hui), dont une majorité se dirige vers la Mauritanie, le Burkina Faso, le Niger, la Côte d'Ivoire, la Guinée, le Sénégal et l'Algérie.
