I. RESUME

La production céréalière prévisionnelle totale des neuf pays du Sahel de la campagne 2005/2006, est évaluée à 15 161 700 tonnes. Si ces chiffres se confirment le Sahel connaîtra une production brute céréalière qui sera supérieure de 34% à celle de la campagne 2004/2005. Le niveau de production attendue sera aussi supérieur de 31% à la moyenne des 5 dernières années.

Northern Horn of Africa

Climatology is expected across most of the region, except locally over northwestern and southwestern Sudan, where there is a slight tilt in the odds favoring below normal rainfall. There is a slight tilt in the odds favoring above normal rainfall locally over eastern Ethiopia, northern Somalia, and portions of Djibouti. Climatology is expected elsewhere.

General Situation up to 20 December 2005

The Desert Locust situation continues to remain relatively calm in Africa and along both sides of the Red Sea. Breeding is in progress in western Mauritania and, to a lesser extent, in southern Algeria. Limited control operations were undertaken in early December in both countries. Small-scale breeding is also underway in the Tokar Delta on the Red Sea coast in Sudan where ecological conditions are favourable. Elsewhere, scattered locusts are probably present in a few places on the Tamesna Plains in Niger and perhaps in northern Mali.

The FAO (http://www.fao.org/ag/locusts/en/info/info/index.html) was last updated on November 29 indicating that the Desert Locust situation remains calm in the summer breeding areas in the Sahel in West Africa. Small-scale breeding is occurring in Mauritania and Algeria.
