West and Central Africa is the region with the world’s second-highest HIV burden. While progress in the HIV response has been slow, political will is positioned to tackle the challenges. Less than half of pregnant and breastfeeding women were covered by prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) services in 2017. An estimated 69,000 adolescents aged 10–19 years were newly infected with HIV in 2017, a number only 1 per cent lower than in 2010. About the same number (67,000) of estimated new HIV infections occurred among children aged 0–9 years in 2017.

Animal health emergencies continue to erupt around the world at an ever-increasing pace. Increased global travel, human migration and informal trade of animals and animal products continue to intensify the risk of disease spread. Infectious diseases and other animal health threats have the potential to move rapidly within a country or around the world leading to severe socio-economic and public health consequences. For zoonoses that develop the ability for human to human transmission, an early response to an animal health emergency could prevent the next pandemic.

The Government of Senegal co-chaired a workshop with UNHCR on the multiyear, multi-partner (MYMP) protection solutions strategy to integrate long-staying refugees into the national system

At the end of July, 837 urban-based refugee were verified, including 132 asylum seekers and 40 persons not of concern to UNHCR. The exercise targeted refugees in Dakar and Thiès from 21 to 28 July 2018

20 September 2018, Rome - Persistent conflicts and climate-related shocks are currently driving high levels of severe food insecurity, particularly in Southern African and Near East countries, which continue to require humanitarian assistance, according to a new report published by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) today.

UNHCR’s Senegal unit participated in the 3rd Financing Conference of The Global Partnership for Education on 2nd February.

The 25th anniversary of DAFI scholarship was celebrated on 19th December 2017. Approximately 130 persons from the education system participated in this German Academic Initiative commemoration.

All the necessary actions were taken to ensure that 26 refugees received the adequate durable solution in conformity with their situation.
