There is no day that goes past without the impact of an improvised explosive device (IED) making headlines around the world. Of all explosive weapons used, the IED is the most widespread, the most harmful and the most pernicious. Based on the belief that to overcome a problem, we must first understand it, this monitor is a small step in seeking to address the terrible realities of today.
It is a monitor that is, also, a response to a call to action.

Berlin – The German De­vel­op­ment Ministry will provide another approximately 5 million euros for the Sahel region in order to prevent the pre­carious food situ­a­tion there from turning into a crisis. In a letter to World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Ertharin Cousin, German De­vel­op­ment Minister Dirk Niebel today committed 3 million euros for WFP programmes in the Sahel coun­tries.

BERLIN – Germany is meeting its G8 commitments made in L'Aquila, where it had promised to provide a total of 2.1 billion euros for food security and rural de­vel­op­ment in the period of 2010 to 2012. "In the budget negotiations, I have been cam­paign­ing for continued support at this level. Food security is a multi-sector task. We will only be able to eradicate malnutrition if we develop rural areas and help farmers to rely on sustainable, productive farming methods, to properly store their harvest and to find markets for their products.

A large part of the funds is to go to the World Food Programme, to be used for its emer­gency food aid in the Sahel countries. Part of the commit­ment is ear­marked for German non-govern­mental organi­sa­tions operating in the region and for the Inter­national Committee of the Red Cross.
