The global burden of Improvised Explosive Devices
Iain Overton and Jennifer Dathan
There is no day that goes past without the impact of an improvised explosive device (IED) making headlines around the world. Of all explosive weapons used, the IED is the most widespread, the most harmful and the most pernicious. Berlin – The German Development Ministry will provide another approximately 5 million euros for the Sahel region in order to prevent the precarious food situation there from turning into a crisis. In a letter to World Food Programme (WFP) Executive Director Ertharin Cousin, German Development Minister Dirk Niebel today committed 3 million euros for WFP programmes in the Sahel countries.
BERLIN – Germany is meeting its G8 commitments made in L'Aquila, where it had promised to provide a total of 2.1 billion euros for food security and rural development in the period of 2010 to 2012. "In the budget negotiations, I have been campaigning for continued support at this level. Food security is a multi-sector task. We will only be able to eradicate malnutrition if we develop rural areas and help farmers to rely on sustainable, productive farming methods, to properly store their harvest and to find markets for their products.
The Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development are making 12 million euros available to fund emergency assistance for the people affected by the drought in the Sahel zone. A large part of the funds is to go to the World Food Programme, to be used for its emergency food aid in the Sahel countries. Part of the commitment is earmarked for German non-governmental organisations operating in the region and for the International Committee of the Red Cross.
