Quarterly Update

Towards the end of the fourth quarter, CERF and its humanitarian partners were challenged by a series of large, complex crises, including three system-wide level-three (L3) emergencies. These crises, in countries including the Central African Republic (CAR), the Philippines, Syria and Yemen, have affected 35 million people who urgently needed emergency relief, protection and basic services. CERF was there to provide a lifeline.

La situation socio politique en Côte d'Ivoire a été marquée cette semaine par une explosion de violence dans plusieurs villes du pays. Ceci est le résultat de débats entre l'opposition et le groupe présidentiel suite à la dissolution la semaine dernière du Gouvernement et de la Commission Electorale Indépendante par le Président. L'insécurité à l'est de la RDC n'a pas changé. En plus de cela, on note la persistance des crises habituelles y compris les épidémies.

General Context

The crisis in DRC has been aggravated in the past weeks by ethnic clashes in the northern Equateur province which have led to the displacement of more than 80,000 people, more than half of them in the neighbouring Republic of Congo.

Pandemic A (H1N1): Twenty nine (29) countries are now affected in our Region with a total case load of 15,887 and 108 deaths as of 30th November 2009.

Pandemic A (H1N1): Twenty nine (29) countries are now affected in our Region with a total case load of 14,950 and 103 deaths as of 16th November 2009 but the overall decline in incidence continues. Other humanitarian concerns include political crises in Guinea and Niger, disease outbreaks, the complex emergencies in central African countries and the food crises in the horn of Africa.

Pandémie A (H1N1): Le nombre des cas confirmés dans notre Région était de 12 216 avec 69 décès au 22 septembre 2009. En Afrique du Sud, l'Institut National pour les Maladies Transmissibles a notifié 11 545 cas confirmés et 59 décès. Les inondations en Afrique de l'Ouest retiennent toujours l'attention de la communauté Humanitaire avec actuellement plus de 635 273 personnes sinistrées et environs 187 morts depuis les trois derniers mois.

Pandemic A (H1N1): The number of confirmed cases in our Region was 12,216 with 69 deaths as of 22nd September 2009. The National Institute for Communicable Diseases in South Africa has reported 11,545 confirmed cases and 59 deaths. Floods in West Africa continue to retain the attention of the humanitarian community with now more than 635,273 people affected and about 187 deaths in the last three months.

Pandemic A (H1N1): The number of confirmed cases has now reached over 8,000 with 40 deaths as of 8th September 2009. South Africa is still accounting for the bulk with 7,606 cases and 31 deaths. Floods in West Africa are retaining the attention of the humanitarian community with more than 600,000 people affected and about 159 deaths in the last three months.

Au 02 septembre 2009 un total de 6 265 cas a été confirmé dans 22 pays africains avec 35 décès. L'Afrique du Sud porte le plus lourd fardeau avec 94% de l'ensemble des cas. Les autres préoccupations humanitaires demeurent les épidémies les urgences complexes dans les pays d'Afrique centrale et la crise alimentaire dans la corne de l'Afrique.

General Context

The Pandemic A (H1N1) is still spreading in the communities. The number of confirmed cases is increasing. As of 25th of August 2009 a total of 5,967 cases were confirmed in 21 African countries with 25 deaths. South Africa continues to be of high concern with 94% of the case load. The WHO advice to the public is not to panic but to take necessary preventive measures such as hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette in households, the community, health care facilities as well as in other settings where people gather.

General Context

The pandemic A (H1N1) has reached a new stage in our Region with the first two deaths reported in South Africa and Mauritius. As of 10th of August 2009 a total of 1,464 cases were reported in 16 African countries. The regional conference organized by the WHO AFRO is taking place in South Africa (11-13 August 2009) to update delegates on the epidemiology of the current pandemic, the processes of national preparedness and response to A (H1N1), develop regional strategies for resource mobilization as well as share experiences among countries.
