General Context

The crisis in DRC has been aggravated in the past weeks by ethnic clashes in the northern Equateur province which have led to the displacement of more than 80,000 people, more than half of them in the neighbouring Republic of Congo.

Pandemic A (H1N1): Twenty nine (29) countries are now affected in our Region with a total case load of 15,887 and 108 deaths as of 30th November 2009.

Pandemic A (H1N1): Twenty nine (29) countries are now affected in our Region with a total case load of 14,950 and 103 deaths as of 16th November 2009 but the overall decline in incidence continues. Other humanitarian concerns include political crises in Guinea and Niger, disease outbreaks, the complex emergencies in central African countries and the food crises in the horn of Africa.

In Cunene, the worst affected province 52,646 people are displaced with 24,000 people living in reception camps in Ongiva. A total of 421 cholera cases and 2 deaths (CFR is 0.48%) were reported*.

A Cunene, la province la plus touchée, 52 646 personnes ont été déplacées et 24 000 autres vivent dans des camps d'accueil à Ongiva. Au total 421 cas de choléra et 2 décès (létalité : 0,48%) ont été notifiés*.

Overview of the 2007 Programme of Work

As the end of 2007 nears, the number of people the World Food Programme is seeking to support has risen to 83 million. The amount of food assistance required to assist these people is valued at US$3.4 billion. Considering resources mobilized thus far in 2007, the current level of funding falls short by some US$653 million.

Additional resources amounting to approximately US$800 million are required before the end of 2007 to ensure uninterrupted food aid deliveries for ongoing activities.

World cereal production in 2007 remains on course to reach a record level of 2 095 million tonnes, but with some major crops yet to be planted, the forecast is still tentative.

Based on the current 2007 production outlook, global cereal supplies are forecast to increase in the new 2007/08 marketing season.
