This overview document presents incidents affecting aid delivery in 12 countries in Southern Africa in 2017. The report is based on incidents identified in open sources and reported by Aid in Danger partner agencies using the Security in Numbers Database (SiND). In 2017, 224 security incidents affecting NGO staff members, programmes and assets were reported. The total number of reported incidents below reflects the willingness of agencies to share information. It is neither a complete count nor representative.

La situation socio politique en Côte d'Ivoire a été marquée cette semaine par une explosion de violence dans plusieurs villes du pays. Ceci est le résultat de débats entre l'opposition et le groupe présidentiel suite à la dissolution la semaine dernière du Gouvernement et de la Commission Electorale Indépendante par le Président. L'insécurité à l'est de la RDC n'a pas changé. En plus de cela, on note la persistance des crises habituelles y compris les épidémies.

The Emergency Relief Coordinator (ERC) has formally invited all Member States to nominate candidates to serve as new members on the Advisory Group of CERF. The Secretary-General will select new experts to serve on the Advisory Group from a range of partners and stakeholders, including Member States, nongovernmental organizations, international organizations, practitioners, and academic and research institutions.

General Context

There is maximum alert and global mobilization in all the member states of the WHO African region following the swine flu epidemic in Mexico and some other countries. There are no official reports of the disease from any of the AFRO countries so far. Other major concerns are the ongoing outbreaks of diseases notably meningitis in the meningitis belt.

Angola: Floods have subsided but the aftermaths continue to hit the affected areas. According to the local authorities in Cunene, the situation is under control.

A ce jour, aucun rapport officiel ne fait mention de la contamination d'un pays dans la Région AFRO. D'autres préoccupations majeures sont les épidémies en cours notamment la méningite dans la ceinture méningitique

General Context

Even though the water levels in Southern Africa is subsiding, humanitarian partners still fear more floods in Angola and Namibia because rains are continuing. Other major concerns are ongoing outbreaks of diseases notably cholera and meningitis.

Angola: More than 200,000 people are directly affected by the flood of which 52,646 are reported displaced in Cunene. 24 deaths are now reported. With rains and flooding expected to continue into the middle of May, concerns have been expressed about the risk of water-borne diseases.

The humanitarian concerns in the African region this week remain the same as the previous week due to ongoing flooding in the Southern Africa and outbreaks of diseases notably cholera and meningitis.

Angola: Floods and Heavy rains continue. Several provinces are affected. In Cunene province, 14 persons have died as a direct consequence of the floods. A Rapid response CERF project has been funded. WHO supported the MoH to conduct assessment in the affected municipalities.

Angola: Les inondations et les fortes pluies continuent. Plusieurs provinces sont touchées. Dans la province de Cunene, 14 personnes sont mortes des conséquences directes des inondations. Un projet CERF de réponse rapide a été financé.

Angola: The flooding affecting Southern and Central provinces is worsening with an estimated 160,000 people affected with 19 recorded deaths. In Cunene, the worst affected province 52,646 people are displaced with 24,000 people living in reception camps in Ongiva. A total of 421 cholera cases and 2 deaths (CFR is 0.48%) were reported*.

Angola : Les inondations touchant les provinces du sud et du centre s'aggravent. On estime à 160 000 les personnes touchées avec 19 décès. A Cunene, la province la plus touchée, 52 646 personnes ont été déplacées et 24 000 autres vivent dans des camps d'accueil à Ongiva. Au total 421 cas de choléra et 2 décès (létalité : 0,48%) ont été notifiés*.
