Reduce the risk of cattle mortality and support agricultural production in the lowlands.

Key partners: Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security and National Institute for Disaster Management.

Beneficiaries reached: 231 729 households.

Activities implemented:

  • Procured and distributed eight balers for fodder harvesting, which contributed to the feeding of 20 000 cattle in 10 000 households.

SITUATION

• Economic challenges and poor rainfall undermine food security in Zimbabwe. Nationally, 92 percent of households in Zimbabwe practice agriculture as their primary livelihood, according to the Zimbabwe Vulnerability Assessment Committee (ZimVAC). After multiple years of drought-reduced harvests, increased planting and good rains increased agricultural production in the first half of 2017, reducing the stress on many households and providing some households with sufficient food stocks to sustain themselves during the current poor agricultural season.

President’s Malaria Initiative by the Numbers

Introduction

Despite remarkable progress in recent years, malaria remains a leading cause of sickness and death across much of sub-Saharan Africa. Malaria disproportionately impacts the rural poor, typically people who must walk for miles to seek treatment. It is also a leading cause of absenteeism among employees, increased health care spending, decreased productivity, and approximately 50 percent of all preventable school absences in Africa. Malaria helps to trap families in a vicious cycle of disease and poverty.

Trop de filles et de femmes n’ont pas encore la liberté de décider elles-mêmes avec qui, quand et combien d’enfants elles souhaitent avoir”._

The budget that the government allocated last year for She Decides – to preserve family planning services – has benefited women in a number of countries, including Ethiopia, Yemen, Mali, Bangladesh and Mozambique. She Decides has also supported several programmes covering multiple countries, such as the West African region as a whole. The Netherlands is spending a total of €29 million on She Decides in 2017 and 2018.

Between FY 2008 and FY 2017, USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) and USAID’s Office of Food for Peace (USAID/FFP) provided humanitarian assistance in response to a range of natural and man-made disasters.

MAPUTO – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today welcomed an additional contribution of €2.6 million from Germany to support food security, resilience building and school feeding activities in Mozambique in 2018. The contribution, channeled through the German Development Bank (KfW), builds on a previous grant of more than €13 million provided by the German Government in late 2016 for WFP operations in Mozambique this year.
