Today, February 14, upon the request of the Government of the Republic of Mozambique, the Government of Japan decided to provide emergency relief goods (tents, blankets etc.) to Mozambique through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the damages caused by the torrential rainfall that occurred on January 13 (local time).

Trop de filles et de femmes n’ont pas encore la liberté de décider elles-mêmes avec qui, quand et combien d’enfants elles souhaitent avoir”._

The budget that the government allocated last year for She Decides – to preserve family planning services – has benefited women in a number of countries, including Ethiopia, Yemen, Mali, Bangladesh and Mozambique. She Decides has also supported several programmes covering multiple countries, such as the West African region as a whole. The Netherlands is spending a total of €29 million on She Decides in 2017 and 2018.

  • Natural disasters and chronic poverty contribute to food insecurity in Mozambique, a nation of approximately 28 million people. The UN World Food Program (WFP) reports that Mozambique is highly susceptible to environmental shocks, including droughts, cyclones and floods, which undermine economic development and damage livelihoods and infrastructure.
    Furthermore, approximately 46 percent of Mozambicans subsist under the national poverty line, according to the World Bank.

  • Mozambican meteorological services (INAM) forecast moderate to high risk of flooding between January-March 2018, particularly in parts of south, central and northern provinces of Mozambique. In response, UNICEF will be implementing a number of actions to strengthen CO preparedness, including working with Government to develop the National Contingency Plan in the weeks ahead.

The Dutch government is giving an additional €4 million to She Decides. She Decides is the international initiative launched by development minister Lilianne Ploumen to safeguard access to family planning for millions of women in developing countries in the face of the US government’s Global Gag Rule. This policy cancels US funding for aid organisations if their services include access to or information about safe abortions.

Thirty years ago, families in Mozambique’s village of Nhantumbi could rely on regular rainfall to cultivate their crops and feed their families. Since then, unpredictable rains, deforestation and unsustainable agricultural practices have caused a steep decline in productivity in Nhantumbi and neighboring villages.

The 2015/2016 El Niño exacerbated the situation, bringing the worst drought the area had seen in three decades. Facing total crop failure, households were forced to look elsewhere for food. Many migrated closer to the Zambian border to find work.
