In 2018, the crisis in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) drastically worsened, spreading to previously unaffected areas and impacting the Great Lakes region. The ongoing conflicts across much of eastern and central DRC continue to cause significant displacement, damage to property and tragic loss of human life.

MOROGORO, Tanzania — The charity famed for its use of specially trained rats in landmine and tuberculosis detection celebrates its 20th anniversary this week.

Harnessing the highly attuned sense of smell in the African giant pouched rat, the international organization APOPO has spent the last two decades training these affectionate rodents in detecting two of the deadliest threats on the planet: landmines and tuberculosis. Each gives off its own unique smell, undetectable to humans, something which the rats are able to quickly sniff out.

Norwegian People’s Aid is proud to announce that we have finished clearing mines at the Mozambique – Tanzania border. After more than 20 years of humanitarian demining, the country has declared itself mine-free.

Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) was one of the first humanitarian demining operators in Mozambique, and has been instrumental part of this victory, says Programme Manager for Norwegian People’s Aid in Mozambique, Afedra Robert Iga.

This is the first consolidated presentation of the reported results of CERF funding, covering a full year of CERF allocations. As such, it serves as a pilot and will inform future CERF results reporting. This report was compiled on the basis of information provided by Resident Coordinators/Humanitarian Coordinators (RC/ HCs) and Humanitarian Country Teams (HCTs) in 66 consolidated reports covering the results of more than 450 CERF-funded projects.

1,3 million Square metres, 144 Cluster Bomblets, 50 Antipersonnel Mines and 23 UXOs: Norwegian People’s Aid is proud to announce that we have finished clearing cluster munitions in Mozambique. This happens only a year after Mozambique was declared free of landmines in September 2015.

Partaking in Mozambique achieving this key milestone is very gratifying. A safer Mozambique free from cluster munition contamination has always been the apex of our commitment, says Programme Manager for Norwegian People’s Aid in Mozambique, Afedra Robert Iga.
