Not only is basic education critical to countries' productivity, education has a direct impact on the health of children and mothers.

Imagine walking for two hours to get to school. And then walking two more hours to get home again. Whether slogging through mud in the brief but intense rainy season or travelling under the heat of a blazing hot sun, kids in a small Ethiopian farming community make the daily trek with a spring in their step. Their energy levels are high.

This seems a little out of place in Tigray, a northern province in Ethiopia plagued by droughts, where there never seems to be enough food to go around.
But the taste of change is being ladled out at their school.

On World Water Day, we are reminded of our good fortune, but also that others worldwide are far less fortunate. 1.1 billion people struggle to survive on unsafe drinking water, jeopardizing both their health and hopes for the future.

During periods of drought, we have seen the devastation brought upon the livelihoods of poor farming and herding families, particularly in Africa. Without proper sanitation facilities, families are threatened with illness and the spread of disease.
