Tropical cyclone DINEO struck Mozambique mid-February 2017 and destroyed houses and infrastructure in the region of the city Inhambane. Since SOS operated a children village in the area, ZKI was activated and used very high resolution radar and optical satellite imagery to generate emergency mapping products. The maps support the damage assessment and planning of reconstruction and recovery measures in the area. The emergency mapping products were generated in the frame of a joint project, kindly funded by Allianz.

On March 2, 2012, tropical storrn Irina struck Madagascar at about 00.00 GMT and is forecasted to hit Mozamboque as a tropical Cyclone about 20:00 GMT on March 3. According to data supplied by the US Navy and Air Force Joint Typhoon Worning Cenrer, the point of landfall will be near 24.9 S, 35.7 E. Irina is expected to bring 1-minute maximum sustained winds to the region of around 129 km/h (80 mph). The storm is expected to cause heavy rain and flash flooding in Mozambique, and storm surges generally between 1.2 and 1.5 metres (4-5 feet).

On January 16, 2012, Mozambique’s coast was hit by the tropical depression “Dando” followed by cyclone “Funso”. With wind speeds up to 220 km/h and torrential rains the storms have caused severe damages and floods.

About 13,000 people as well as communication and infrastructure along the coast have been affected.
