Baltimore, March 19, 2001 - When flooding hit Mozambique in March for the second year in a row, $530,000-worth of clothing, school kits, health kits, layettes and quilts were already on their way from Lutheran World Relief to the Lutheran World Federation program there. LWF has been providing food and shelter to over 8,000 people affected by the floods. An LWR aid shipment last year arrived in time to help people who fled the more extensive flooding a year ago.

Baltimore, July 27, 2000 -- Long-term recovery - for nearly half a million flood survivors - is the focus of current work that Lutheran World Relief is supporting in Mozambique. Providing seeds and tools, re-establishing community health care and repairing schools are among the main goals of the $8.9 million program. Farm-to-market roads will also be rebuilt using 1,000 laborers who will be paid with food. Certain areas will continue to receive food and shelter assistance.

Four cargo aircraft will fly from Denmark with 160 metric tons of plastic sheeting, emergency food, water purification tablets, tents, blankets, small motorboats, kitchen sets and medicines to cover some 20,000 people for three months against a number of common diseases. The airlift is partly sponsored by the international emergency alliance, Action by Churches Together, that includes Lutheran World Relief.

Lutheran World Relief is helping provide emergency food, basic shelter and resettlement to safer areas for people who fleeing their homes because of extensive flooding in Mozambique and South Africa. In Mozambique, a Lutheran World Relief partner agency is extending aid to 7,000 families. In South Africa, food, blankets and temporary shelter are being prepared for as many as 17,000 families.
