Highlights

More than 17,479 cholera / AWD cases and 268 deaths (Case Fatality Rate, 1.5%) have been reported in 10 of 21 countries of Eastern and Southern Africa Region (ESAR) since the beginning of 2018. These countries include; Angola, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Zambia accounts for 23.4% of the total case load reported this year followed by Kenya at 22.5%.

Key Messages

  • Cereal production during the upcoming harvest season in Southern Africa is expected to be below average, despite the heavy late rains, which benefitted the late planted crops. This is due to a late start of the rainy season, minimal to no rains during the critical planting season (December -January), high temperatures and the prevalence of Fall Armyworm (FAW).

Every two minutes, a child dies of malaria

Malaria is a preventable and treatable disease that remains, in many regions of the world, a major public health problem[i]. Ninety-one countries currently experience ongoing malaria transmission. Almost half the world’s population - about 3.2 billion people - are at risk of malaria. In 2016 alone, 216 million new cases of malaria were reported, and approximately 445,000 people died of the disease – most of them children.

We were inspired by the strength and love of a mother who pushed a heavy wheelchair more than a kilometer on a sandy path to take her child to school every day.

Ilídio was born in a country where opportunities for children with disabilities are very limited. For a long time, he stayed at home with his mom, or all by himself. But now he goes to school. He has friends to play with. He is learning how to write, and can even speak two languages. Ilídio dreams of driving a car one day!

Koko, Macomia District, Cabo Delgado, March 13 2018 - Following the most severe drought in 30 years caused by the 2016/2017 El Niño phenomenon - which in Mozambique affected approximately 2.3 million people - in 2017 the DFID Fund for the Lean Season Nutrition Response and Resilience Building in Mozambique, in partnership with WPF and UNICEF, decided to support the Government in addressing the immediate needs of the affected population in four provinces (Cabo Delgado,Manica, Tete and Zambezia).

  • Erratic rainfall, high temperatures and persistent Fall Armyworm infestation lower cereal crop production prospects for 2018 in southern Africa.

  • In the absence of consistent rains for the remainder of the season, dry conditions experienced in December to January will further diminish water supplies for domestic, agricultural and commercial use.

  • These conditions are likely to have far reaching consequences on access to adequate food and nutrition and ability of farmers to produce in the 2018/19 consumption year.
