Map-1: On Feb. 17, NASA's Terra satellite provided this visible image that showed the center of the low pressure area over Zimbabwe and clouds extended over found Dineo's clouds stretched over southern Mozambique, Swaziland, eastern Botswana and northeastern South Africa.

Residents of Mozambique’s Zambezia province are accustomed to picking up their belongs and heading for higher ground during the wet season. But even by local standards, the onslaught that arrived in January 2015 has been unusual.

After days of torrential rain pushed the lower Limpopo River over its banks in late January 2013, flood water surrounded the city of Xai-Xai in southern Mozambique. The Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite captured this natural-color image on January 31.

Infrared NASA satellite imagery showed Cyclone Giovanna moving south through the Mozambique Channel on Thursday, February 16, 2012. Infrared data showed that Giovanna was regaining strength in the warm waters of the Channel, and the strongest thunderstorms were west of the storm's center.

Over the past three weeks, torrential wet season rains have fallen throughout parts of south-central Africa, including Zaire, Tanzania, Mozambique, Malawi, Madagascar and adjacent waters. This image shows a rainfall accumulation map obtained using NASA's Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) satellite, combined with data from other rain measuring satellites. Three weeks of rain accumulation are shown, beginning on January 1, 2003. Rainfall accumulations approach two feet in some locations, leading to serious flooding and the displacement of many people from their homes.
