Description of the disaster

A plague outbreak in Madagascar raised concern in neighbouring countries. As of 12 October 2017, a total 684 cases (suspected, probable and confirmed) including 57 deaths (CFR 8.3%) had been reported from 35 out of 114 districts. Of these, 474 were clinically classified as pneumonic plague.

On 16 October 2017, Madagascar Ministry of Health (MoH) reported that caseload that was at 805 (confirmed and suspected) with 74 deaths.

• This Emergency Appeal was launched on 22 April 2016 for CHF 1,702,895 to enable the IFRC to support the Cruz Vermelha de Moçambique (CVM) to reach 14,767 people (2,953 households) in 6 districts with food assistance to meet emergency needs and livelihoods interventions to promote recovery for nine months.

Downpours due to the Tropical cyclone Dineo resulted in flooding in additional areas. Recently, the Met services alerted that rains will continue and the water in rivers will further increase, which would result in overflooding and therefore affecting new areas in addition to the ones affected by the cyclone. Gaza province (the districts of Chibuto, Guja and Chokwe) is the most affected where 1,743 households have been reported affected and 1,313 houses destroyed.
