Zambia
On 3 November riots broke out in several areas of the capital Lusaka. The protests were against the dismissal of the ruling Patriotic Front’s (PF) secretary-general, Edgar Lungu, by interim President Guy Scott, the acting leader until elections take place.

Mozambique
As the rainy season starts, the Government of Mozambique is preparing for the possibility of floods and has set aside US$32 million of its national budget to deal with the possibility of flooding.

Moderate Tropical Storm Bejisa is projected to move in a southerly to south-easterly direction, with the centre passing between Mauritius and Reunion islands from 2 to 3 January 2014. Associated rain is likely to occur from 31 December and intensify on 1 January 2014, with the likelihood of floods and strong winds.

Angola:
A cholera outbreak has been recorded in Cunene Province which has claimed the lives of dozens of people.

Mauritius:
On 28 November 2013, heavy rains were recorded in Mauritius, however no major damage was reported. Some schools were forced to close and unconfirmed reports indicate that approximately 45 houses were affected by water damage, with a total of 279 people accommodated in emergency shelters.

JOHANNESBURG, 22 August 2008 (IRIN) - The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has announced it will go ahead with plans to set up a regional grain reserve, while urging member states not to impose export restrictions on maize as the region grapples with high food prices.
