Annual Report: relief aid tripled in 2015

In 2015, Dorcas helped 373,375 people in emergency situations, which is more than three times as many people as last year. Many of these people were displaced because of the earthquake in Nepal, others were refugees from Syria and Iraq and there were many who fled because of the turmoil in eastern Ukraine. You can read all the details in our recently released annual report. Dorcas is thankful for all the donations and funds that made all of this possible.

The Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Food Security Policy recently released its annual report covering research and activities progress over the past year. The overall goal of the FSP program is to promote inclusive agricultural productivity growth, improved nutritional outcomes, and enhanced livelihood resilience for men and women through improved policy environments. The goal will be achieved by fostering credible, inclusive, transparent and sustainable policy processes at country and regional levels and filling critical policy evidence gaps.

  • Many countries across the African continent face recurrent complex emergencies, frequent food insecurity, cyclical drought, and sudden-onset disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and storms. In FY 2015, as in previous years, USAID/OFDA not only responded to urgent needs resulting from disasters, but also supported DRR programs that built resilience and improved emergency preparedness, mitigation, and response capacity at the local, national, and regional levels.

Highlights:

§ Following reports that maize prices in some districts have now increased above the Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee projected maximum price, a rapid monitoring exercise was undertaken from 27th to 31st December, 2015. Results of the assessment are yet to be released, however it is expected that the number of people that will not be able to meet their basic food requirements as the lean seasons progresses will increase.

The news that Mozambique has declared itself landmine-free is cause for celebration and a huge achievement. But we must acknowledge the tragic truth that much more needs to be done to make life safe for the thousands of people still living with these hidden killers in other countries.

We must not let minefields be forgotten. Whenever and wherever wars happen, innocent people should not be the ones who pay the price.

APOPO's team of bomb disposal specialists have blown up the first batch of mortar bombs and ammunitions, found at the Malhazine site in Maputo. The first destruction of 3,5 tons of explosives is an important step in transforming the deadly site into a public park and nature reserve.

A comprehensive 12-day training for police officers in the Gaza Province of Mozambique ended on Monday, November 24. The course is part of a government effort to establish a national capacity to manage the residual contamination from unexploded munitions of war (UXOs). It included training on identification of types of munitions, assessment of risks, disposal of explosive devices and basic first aid.
